Ive personally meditated w/ and w/out cannabis. And I must say it is obviously much easier to get in the trance stoned, but you must keep your thoughts from running away from you as they do when youre high.
Being high definitely makes you extremely focused on one thing for a while but can easily jump ship to the next if not controlling. Plus you need to learn how to get in the clear state of mind without it, being high can just be an added bonus to go further sometimes but you dont want to be dependent on it. Remember its the addiction that goes along with anything thats the problem, never the actual action or substance.
I already see your confusion building as to what needs to be done to achieve proper meditation. There is no way, there is no step that is the same for everyone. Everyones paths are different in life, what makes you think their meditation techniques would be the same? Whatever works for you, use it. If having nothing around you and no music, no chanting, no anything works, go ahead. I personally just playing some higher vibration meditation soundtracks while sitting or laying next to the bass of my stereo system. I sometimes cover my eyes as to not look around, sometimes dont. I sometimes chant certain old ways (Edgar Cayce use to chant along the lines of something "Aaaa Eeee Ouuu") but in reality its just any chant that make a nice clean vibration throughout. The point is not the words but more so the vibration you feel throught, thats what youre trying to focus in on.
Deep breaths, relax, clear your mind, and youll eventually find whatever way is best for you.
