An account of my dreams, or what I remember of them at the very least. Some are mundane with a few unrealistic twists, some are just completely out there. This is in an attempt to analyze for potential meanings, as well as to increase the effectiveness of my dream recall.

    1. Pride, Prejudice, etc.

I haven't updated my online dream journal in ages. I've been keeping a fairly consistent paper one, recalling at least a single dream on most nights.

This one, however, was rather interesting.

I wasn't quite myself; it was as if I was playing a character, a role. I was the son and sole heir to a rich and prestigious family. This seemed to be set in a time before electricity at the very least. However, there was a strange circumstance; for the inheritance of the family to be passed onto the heir and not entailed, it must be given to the daughter of the family (who never did exist). As a result, I, as the son, had to dress as a woman. I recall a very tidy blue dress with a white pinafore, and attempts to make my medium-length hair look more convincing.

In any case, this seemed to continue on for some time; cut ahead to a scene of chasing the father around a garden, passing by some decorative tiles in the garden which struck me with their beauty, and eventually, meeting someone. This is the part I remember best. A very, very tall and fairly broad man with unusual features. His face was deformed somehow, noticeably asymmetrical. He had a short but shaggy beard, glasses and possibly a lazy eye. I'm unsure if his features were distorted as a result of being an unclear dream character, but I have never seen anyone like him. I was rather drawn to him; in spite of his possibly frightening appearance, he was very kind and rather intelligent. Unfortunately, he was of a lower social standing. In spite of that, I disregarded societal norms and sought his interest, to be rewarded with it in turn.

It was quite interesting to me. It seems to play a lot on gender identity and overlooking outward appearances (or first impressions) of other people to see what lies inside. It was certainly memorable.

    2. Red manor maiden.

      by , 09-16-2012 at 04:24 AM
Once again, I've neglected this online dream journal.

This is something I have to share, though... It's really just a vague recollection of a dream that seemed to go very quickly.
I dreamt I was in a large, old style house, a very lavish one at that. It was dark and cold outside, seemingly autumn due to the orange leaves visible on the ground. The events that transpired in the manor were unclear, but there was a lot of "red" symbolism... Red walls, red flowers, particularly roses, and a young girl clad in red gown, who seemed to be attacking and killing people (or monsters disguised as people) in the manor... More red, in the form of blood.
I recall talking to her, but she wasn't hostile. She seemed like she was protecting something, rather than being malicious. She gave off the impression of being on my side, and she was startlingly mature for someone of her age. I don't remember anything else, and it was an earlier dream of the night, so I'm lucky to remember much at all.

The reason I've posted this, however, is that upon telling one of the friends I live with about this dream, she asked if the flowers were red. I said yes, and she shared a story of having some hypnopompic imagery of a vase of red flowers the same morning after I had the dream. This was interesting as it was, but I continued to explain, especially in terms of the mysterious girl, and she asked if her hair was straight and black, which it was. It seems she has dreamt of her as well in the past.

    3. Witch hunt.

      by , 09-09-2012 at 06:34 PM
Once again, the dreams just before waking were both the most vivid and the most memorable.

I was attending a new university, and it was probably November, judging by the mixture of fall leaves and faint dusting of snow on the ground. I was wandering around inside, looking for my class in the building, whose walls were ocean blue with slate-grey floors. I met someone who noticed that I was lost, and she helped me find my way to class.

Class must not have been interesting, since it ended very quickly, to the point where it felt like I had skipped it altogether. I met up with my new friend in the courtyard of the school. The sky was a mixture of streaked-grey and pale blue, and the courtyard had a large platform made of pastel-coral bricks. We sat down, and my focus shifted to another pair; a woman around my age with auburn hair a bit past her shoulders and glasses. She was with a dark-haired female friend, and she seemed to be watching someone, a man. He walked by and called out a surname, likely hers, and she called his back, but he walked up to another girl and kissed her. I could sense that the auburn-haired girl was disappointed but tried to hide it (I had gathered that the other girl shared surnames with her, hence the misunderstanding). The man looked back at her and mocked her.

Suddenly, the administrator of the school (or so he seemed) appeared and the sky went dark; he shone a spotlight from above on the auburn-haired girl, and made an indistinct speech. It ended with an accusation - he called her a witch, and said she needed to be exterminated. He called out to four students in the four cardinal directions, and assigned an element to each of them (Earth, Air, Water, Fire). They then used seemingly normal objects (such as a grate) to concentrate energy on the center of the courtyard where the "witch" was. She was enveloped in a dome-shaped barrier that seemed to keep her inside. The administrator then ushered everybody inside of the school building. I had a feeling that he was going to leave her in the elemental prison he had constructed until she died of exposure, starvation, what have you.

I felt very bad for her, and somehow like I was connected, and possibly in the same situation as a potential witch myself... Why I felt this, I am unsure. What I did know was that I wanted to help her, but I woke up before I could do so.

      Notes:

      - My point of view shifted a few times from my own to that of a third-person view above the auburn-haired girl.
      - This dream has given me an idea or two for a book I'd like to write... Dreams are inspiring, aren't they?
      - This was the first night after I resumed taking a 5-HTP supplement (not specifically for dreaming, but it does have an effect as I've noticed with past dream-related use). However, I was taking it in three separate daily doses, not at bedtime, so the REM suppression effect probably isn't as strong as a single nighttime dose.

    4. In-dream Dream Diary

      by , 09-09-2012 at 12:44 AM
This one comes from a few nights ago as well. You'll see that something bizarre happens; if it's happened to anybody else, please share your experience!

This is one of many dream fragments I recall from this particular night. I was at a nice restaurant with white tablecloths and elegant dishware and crystal with my mom. She seemed older than she is now, which made me assume that I, too, had aged to a degree. We were discussing something that I can't remember, when I suddenly realized I was dreaming... Perhaps the dream sign was the age difference - it seemed like a relatively unprovoked awareness of dreaming.
This is where it gets weird. In the middle of our conversation, I take from my lap beneath the tablecloth a dream diary that greatly resembled the one I use in the waking world, and began to write everything down. When my mother questioned me, I stated "I'm writing everything down so I'll remember it when I wake up!"

More events occurred after, and I did document what I could recall, but this is really the most interesting point in my dream. Has this happened to anyone else?

      Notes:
      - I was unsure whether I had actually written anything down upon waking up. I thought I had at first, but checked my diary and found nothing. I then proceeded to scribble down what I could.
      - My distinction between waking-reality and dream-reality was blurred upon waking. I read a text message from my friend on my phone, and I didn't know if it was real; it turns out that it was. My response was a little funny; in it, I told my friend I wasn't sure if I was dreaming.

    5. Tasting in Dreams

      by , 09-09-2012 at 12:36 AM
I've been neglecting this dream journal as of late; I'd like to add this entry from a few nights ago, as something interesting happened to me.

This was towards the end of my span of sleep, and I had awakened once earlier in the morning. Returning to sleep often brings me vivid dreams, even though it isn't a typical WBTB as I don't focus on dreaming in any way as I fall asleep.
Regardless, I was preparing food for a fancy party, and had been told to use a rosé wine in a dish. To be sure that it tasted good, I splashed it onto my face, Neutrogena advertisement-style. The odd thing was, I could taste it so well! It tasted refreshing, light and fruity, and its flavour was every bit as rose-pink as it looked.
...I then proceeded to add the entire bottle to a bowl of scrambled eggs, saying to myself "What a waste!".

      Notes:
      - Typically, I don't taste things in my dream. That is, I don't ingest things, so tasting generally isn't an option. Even in brief lucid periods, I don't eat or drink anything more than water.
      - The vividness of the wine's taste was remarkable, and it didn't taste alcoholic at all (nor have I ever had rosé wine).

    6. Becoming a Charmed One?

      by , 09-03-2012 at 05:11 PM
It began with a visit to my family (which also happened in a dream from the night before). It seemed to be around Christmas time, and I was at my grandparents' old house. After spending some time there (it seemed to pass very quickly within the dream), I packed my bags. I noticed a lamp/chandelier in my suitcase, and my grandmother said it was a present. It was melting/oozing a sap-like substance, and I asked, "Do I have to take it with me? It's kind of messy."

I'm not sure what happened after that, but I believe I got on a bus to return home. I do remember getting off of that bus in the middle of a field, but it didn't seem to be winter outside; more like Fall (strange, given that it was Christmas not long before). I bumped into a familiar character from the television show Charmed (which I was watching before bed), and she seemed scared. Eventually, we encountered a demon that preys on people by showing them their worst fears. He demanded some sort of potion, and he chased us until we reached the manor from the show.

I managed to trap him in one of the rooms and used time-freezing powers to stop him temporarily (that part was cool). Only one of the sisters from the show was in the house, and she said we needed to contact the other two to make the potion, so I put my hands to my head and concentrated... And then concluded, "Wait, I don't have summoning powers". Oddly, a jeep pulled up in front of the house with the other two sisters in it... I guess I could summon in that dream after all. They came inside, and the fear demon broke out of the room. He demanded the potion, so I gave him a green liquid in a glass (something else from the day before). He drank it, said something about his powers expanding, and tried to show me my worst fears. I seemed to know something he didn't (even though I wasn't sure what it was), and as he created the illusions, I could only laugh, as I saw cats dancing on their hind legs as music played. He was defeated by his failure to kill us with our fears, and the day was saved.

I spoke with the other dream characters a bit before waking up... And I noticed my speech getting slurred. This was a little strange, and I apologized for it. Shortly after this, I woke up and noticed that my mouth was very dry. I guess that explains that!

      A few notes:

      - This dream seems to have a few residues from the day before, most notably the green beverage (it was actually a Greens+ supplement in water), the characters from Charmed (as I watched it before bed), and especially the fear demon, since he was in an episode I watched.
      - I seemed to have more powers than usual in this dream. I sometimes take enough control in a dream to utilize powers I like, but it seemed encouraged by the setting in this dream, since it was based on a TV show involving magic. Stopping time is especially relevant to the show. Summoning is just a common occurrence for me in dreams.
      - I've visited my family in dreams two nights in a row, now (though in the previous dream I ended up hiding in a secluded cottage from them.)
      - The dry mouth/swollen in-dream tongue thing was an interesting interaction between waking-world and dream-world.
