    The Afterlife

This is one of my first DJ entries, so please bare me on details.
    This was a normal dream

So it started out me being in school, a normal day, and apparently this religious information class came up. I became curious and entered it. The instructor led us throughout the school, one of the rooms being a gigantic area full of indoor tennis courts (I play tennis in real life) I saw one of the tennis players on our Varsity team playing. The instructor led us into this area, where they did some sort of service, (a kind of baptism?) but we all ended up dying, now, this is where things got scary for me. THis led me into the afterlife, the christian image of it at least. And I instantly was terrified, thoughts of me dying so young, leaving my family behind, thoughts of them mourning, me going to hell (I'm not christian IRL) all flooded my mind as I waited in this white space, and I heard a voice above me, say "You will go to hell and face eternal punishment." This terrified me so much, I woke up, I was still scared. But this entire time, I was wondering why couldn't I realize I'm dreaming? I had this undermining feeling near the end of the dream to wake up, so I don't see why I didn't realize it was a dream.

Sorry to hear you had an unpleasant dream. You know our minds during sleep are not fully rationally functional, so there are times when we dream of things that are so weird that our waking life would never accept them, but our dreaming mind just reacts to them as if they were real. Now, I suspect that the fact that you wanted to wake up is a good sign and that perhaps lucid dreaming is not far away. Since I am a Christian, I hope you realize that not all Christians are into scaring others with eternal punishment in hell. Some Christians would be as disturbed as you by this idea, probably for similar reasons. I wish you better dreams next time!

Sorry that you had such an awful dream! I've had some similar experiences, wanting to "wake up" but not really being able to. I was talking to Canis about this the other day. Seems like you need to recognize you're dreaming, know you're supposed to do something with that knowledge, then actually apply the knowledge and become lucid. I've had several dreams where I recognized it was a dream, but never did anything about it. You can guess that I was kicking myself when I woke up.

There was one dream I had where I was telling myself "I'm dreaming, I'm dreaming" over and over again because everything was so awful. I didn't become lucid and I think it might have been because there was a fear that the dream was real, and I was trying to fly and stuff because I didn't want to face facts. It never really clicked.

But like JoannaB said, lucid dreaming probably isn't far off! Your brain just needs to apply the knowledge.
