      Actually you are all wrong.

It is a very very very very very very very very crap movie.

I was so looking forward to watching that movie as well, when i started watching it i was like surely this film is going to get better but it didn't.

      What a boring film.

I didn't like it when I first viewed it; I didn't even finish it the first time. But when I got interested in philosophy and tried watching it again, I absolutely loved it.

I've never seen a Richard Linklater film that wasn't far and away better than 97% of the crap out there, even his screwball comedies.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

      I liked it.

I was baked when I saw it, but I liked it, nonetheless.

It is a mental film. My guess would be that many watch it expecting otherwise.

If you mean mental as in "off-the-wall", I thought is was incredibly dull. And if you mean "thought provoking" the only thought it provoked me to think was a general hatred towards a world which would allow the talentless, banal, dreary and general hopeless lead to get a paid job of any description, let alone a major role in a movie.

If anyone deserves to be enslaved in a brickworks in rural China and be forced to work 18-hour days in hot kilns burning the skin off your feet, and being beaten regularly, it is him for having the audacity to ever think he has an iota of talent.

But instead he get a (satisfyingly short) career in Hollywood and a blog as if anyone cared.

Yeah I think maybe most of the people here just watched it to watch it. I was taking Philosophy class at the time and that's why I enjoyed it so much.

I think it does help to be familiar with several of the perspectives presented in the movie, so that it's not just information overload and you can follow the journey. For a more grounded but lower production value version, try Linklater's early film, Slacker. I think my favorite movie of his is Before Sunset, the sequel-10+-years-removed to Before Sunrise.

I was just going to mention Before Sunset as an example of a great movie that is completely dialogue driven.

Not all movies have to be exciting/gory/explosive etc. Appreciation of a good film often has a lot to do with expectations and state of mind. Waking Life is a great movie that I wouldn't recommend to too many people. It demands that the viewer bring something to the film, but most viewers like having the film spoon-fed to them.

Not that I don't also occasionally like to be spoon-fed, but there's a lot more to a good movie than that.

      ^ Well said.

Even if the movie is understood and you still don't like it, I cannot imagine not at least appreciating it's separation from most films; which are not much more than an attempt to attract the most viewers.
