Failed attempt to control a dream

So I never really used any form of dream control, mostly because I didn't really know you could stabilize a dream by rubbing your hands or spinning stuff like that, as I wrote many times before all my lucid experiences have only been personal experiences, no people around me really know about lucid dreams. So thats why I haven't got any tips from it and since I joined this forum I have only had 2 lucid dreams, none witch I had any chance of actually do any dream control. One was rushed and one it didn't feel like I had control since it was a DILD, I'm mostly experienced with WILDs.

With that said, I did though attempt dream control in a normal dream, since the situation was annoying and kinda scary. Thing is, I simply never have any nightmares for several years, probably 6-7 years.

Better tell what the dream is about, and start a bit before where the dream control became relevant.
So I was observing a dad and his crippled son, the kid was very young about 2 years old and walked on crutches (yes it was weird), and so they approached stairs. The dad knew he couldn't help the son, because he simply didn't accept any help. So the son tried to walk down the stairs, and on the last step he fell, and the son screamed, but the still walked to the other set of stairs down, and the dad still knew he could not help. This time he failed to even take one step, and fell all the way down. The son screamed extremely loud, it felt like he became a baby and his eyes turned black. A demon child would be the best way to describe him now. This is the closest thing I have been to a nightmare since the 7 years back. This is kind of where I gained consciousness to, because I had an idea to probably not be able to witness this part of the dream, and it was to hold my hands over my ears. Then the dad was able to calm the son down by holding him, the son seemed to accept him holding him this time and his eyes because normal again, it was still like he was ready to scream. Then another thing happened, a man approached and he was very annoying, and I knew it was going to be able to make the kid scream again if he saw them and I simply didn't want this to happen. So now I began to hold my ears and as fast as I did this I woke up, and it felt like the annoying man came with me as I woke up. So I was in my bed kind of awake in sleep paralysis, I heard the man talking to me but I count make sense of what he was saying, I tried to get out of the paralysis but I could not move at all for about a minute and then finally I could get out of it.

All that was going trough my mind was that the dream punished me for attempting to use dream control. Also, the thing about holding my ears was only an idea that in the dream I figured that doing this would work, nothing I have read anywhere that it would.

So I would like to know if the thing I did wrong was to either try to ''run'' from the nightmare or the choice of the action was wrong.

Erm, I know, I'm well aware of that. Point being is that I felt punished by my dream or mind for attemting to not deal with the annoying or scary dream by doing one thing I fear the most, being paralysed with fear in a half wake state.

it's true that sometimes it could fight us
for example I once wanted to do some experiments with my mind and someone appeared in my dream and pushed me away (like Jedi force) and I understood that I shouldn't do that
every time it's saying something but it's kinda hard to translate it
