Question DILD: How Do You Do It??

How do you recognize you're dreaming to have a lucid dream?? I've had dreams, and remember most or all of them, but I can never get to the point where I know I'm dreaming. And I can't really preform reality checks because that would suggest that I'm suspecting I'm dreaming; I have absolutely no idea that I'm dreaming; it feels so much like real life that I don't question it! Does anyone know what I'm talking about??

I think the trick is to do reality checks after normal events during your daily life, so that when that events happens in a dream, be it realistic or not, you do the check anyway and then become lucid when you realise it is a dream.

This thread from the tutorials section has more on the concept and some good suggestions for reality checks:

      Hope this helps.

lol, for me it is getting easier for me to realise im dreaming. if i stand still in my dream long enough i can get a grip and realize im dreaming.

i do reality checks daily, but i never use them in my dream, i just assume i am dreaming. dreaming has a feel to it. but somtimes may vary from dream to dream.

usually DC's got me running all over the place and i don't have time.

lol, im just going on all about myself here and didn't answer your question.

just do reality checks.(nose plug the best.) just do it through out the day, eventually u will do the same in your dream.

Yeah, I know what you mean. In dreams we tend to build our own explanations for why strange things are happening. Example: "My light switch won't work, that's weird. There must be a power outage." And because it's a dream, as soon as we think that, there is a power outage, so we don't question it later on.

I think the key is to start honestly questioning reality when even trivial things go wrong... like the light switch example above.

I sort of know what you mean. What, exactly, does it "feel" like? That way, I can do reality checks to be able to confirm if I'm dreaming or not.

DILDs for me its like a chance to happen, they happen either when im very bored from the dream so bored that it just doesnt seem real for me. I get this feeling that I knew I was dreaming the whole time but just now ive decided to step out of the scenario.

Reading about lucid dreaming increase chance to have a DILD. Sometimes what you read stays in your subconcious and projected in your dream and it can get you lucid.

Do reality checks often throughout the day, and they're supposed to carry on into you're subconcious. Also, in waking life, it helps to question events that might seem weird or out of the ordinary. (e.g. The light switch doesn't work, your friend said something that didn't really make sense, etc.)

      What does dreaming feel like?

I feel...floaty, like I could jump twice and fly, which you can. It's hard to describe; it's just different. When you've had enough lucids you start to notice it.

Good way to describe it, i get that a lot too. But other times i will be in a dream and ill say to myself "theres no way this is a dream" but ill do a reality check anyway and just stand there in awe for little bit.

      habit

The biggest thing for me, was making RC checks a habit. I've been doing them in real life for like.. 20 days now, and its a habit. So, last night, I was in a dream, and poof. I did an RC because its a habit, and i realized I was dreaming. Awesome right?

Tried to fly, but was too scared.

I used to do RCs and I still do, just not as often as I used to since I never use them [well, sometimes I do but it's never the ones I use in RL]. I just have a habit of questioning my state of awakeness only while dreaming [a wonderful habit that I mysteriously developed]. If I'm in a dream long enough, I do come to a point of word for word asking if I'm dreaming so from there it's all up to me to stay focused enough to answer that question. Because you know, dreaming has that feel of hyper reality.

I do RCs occasionally, but I realized a while ago that I've only actually done one reality check within a dream that sent me into lucidity. I always just notice something out of the ordinary and know that I must be dreaming. That's my reality check, I just look at the world.

Record your dreams and look for patterns. If most of your dreams happen at work, do reality checks at work, if certain friends show up more than normal, do reality checks when with them. My favourite: Do reality checks as soon as you wake up, about half of my lucid dreams have been false awakenings.

Aw, no fair ninja... whenever I remember do RCs when I wake up it's RL and not an FA, I never remember to do one in a FA...not that I have them too often...

DILDS for me just require a balance, you need to make your goals clear but not to the extent in which your putting pressure on yourself to have lucid dreams every night because if you fail your going to feel disappointed and most likely put even more pressure on yourself to have a lucid dream the next night. A DILD for me requires patience and dedication. But the results in the long run are well worth it!

I don't pressure myself but I don't do much to prepare for it... maybe I will if I find any useful info in the LDing books I'm reading. Maybe that's why most of the time I'm whisked away somewhere beforeI figure out it's all a dream [then forget what I was asking myself... great work LucidBulbs, great work]

Well... In my case, I use WBTB as it seems to give me a little more consciousness in my dreams. Then, when something really weird happens I'm like "wait a moment... this is freaky! I'm probably dreaming... let me do a RC!"
It's been getting easier for me to do the more I lucid dream.
I've heard that if you try to maintain your consciousness for as long as you can before you fall asleep, you may bring some of that consciousness into your dreams. Still need to experiment a little more with that!

I'd say, read on DV a lot, KEEP A DREAM JOURNAL, and as your recall improves, your awareness in dreams will improve, which will more quickly prompt you to question the fact that you're riding a dragon on the way to the grocery store.

To be honest, I never have got lucid from a reality check. I just realize I am dreaming, something just tells me I am.

      My DILD's happen 1 of 3 ways.

      1) I just suddenly know I am dreaming (Happens Often).
      2) The dream starts out and I am already Lucid (Happens Often).
      3) I do a reality check (Happens Rarely).

I notice there a few stages to dreams that I will just briefly go over nothing even close to a deep explanation.

      1) You think your dream is sure fire reality
      2) You think your dream is reality with the exception of "strange" occurrences.
      3) You notice many strange and odd things and ask if you are dreaming.

No if you think your dream is sure fire reality the chances of you being aware enough to do a reality check are very very slim.
If you think it is reality but notice some odd occurences this may cause you to ask whether or not you are dreaming causing a DILD.
And if you are very aware and noticing a multitude of strange occurrences then you are most likely going to go lucid.

I tend to find the easiest way is to recognise your dream signs, the common things that appear in your dreams, these then in turn can help you question the dream state to realise you are dreaming, and over time you can master this so that everytime you see your dream sign you can become lucid from doing so. I have tought myself that everytime I see a girl in my dreams, I can become lucid, for me they are in my dreams a lot lol.

You just have to be focused on your signs and know them, write them down, think about them before you sleep. Then hopefully if you encounter them in your dreams you will question being in a dream.

Also helps to have vivid dreams, and be able to pick out unrealistic events, example your naked when you wouldn't be, or that you with people you would never normally associate yourself with. These things, and again having vivid dreams helps, help you to question your dreams and become lucid.

      Good luck

Not necessarily. You can fall asleep and then you reach REM sleep and you automatically gain consciousness that you're dreaming.

My method is to RC whenever I'm reminded of dreaming or something weird happens.
