A very good dream question - must read!!!

      Hey!

I have been LD for a month now and there is one question that haunts me very deeply. La Berge says you can incubate your own dram scenario. You could be dreaming that you are a slave building pyramids, that you are visiting San Francisco, that you are a citizen of 2 B.C. Rome or whatever. Now I really wonder: How can you dream about those things if you never actually experienced it in the real world??? Everything that you dream about is in my opinion extracted and then mixed in strange combinations from the real world. So my question is: can you actually LD about something that you never actually saw or experienced in real life and do you think this is a genuine experience? Don't get me wrong. OK, you can fly and visit all sorts of places. But if you break down the dream environment on small pieces, you realize they all come out from the real world experience. I mean ALL visual informations that we recieve come from the real world - you can also see it in the movies or the paintings etc. All the components are in the real world. It's just the way they are put together in our dreams.
So I wonder - how can you dream of visting San Francisco if you never been there. I mean I was dreaming about all sorts of places, but I knew they were just my own versions of those places that were created in my mind, not the actual places.

So, can you have a truly genuine LD experience about a real time and place in the human history or anything else that you are absolutely sure couldn't be the result of you rel life visul memory? Has anyone experienced that? How do you know it was a genuine feeling? Everyhing I was ever dreaming about so far came from my own (sub)consciousness.

Yes then no. you can dream about anywhere, but it will be different based on your assumption on what it looks like. Say if someone tells you that lithuania has volcanoes in it(and there lying), then in your dream you might dream about being in lithuania and you see volcanoes, even though in fact there are no volcanoes. whatever you dream of someplace it'll be what you perceive it as.

look at what i wrote above. it all depends on how you perceive the place as(conciously or subconciously)

it wont be genuine, unless you've been there or just generally know a lot about the place. I have. Just yeterday I dreamt that i was at a flea market on the beach of brazil. I have been to brazil, but I have NEVER even been close to the beach. so subconciously, i thought they have flea markets on the beach, but im pretty sure in reality that they don't...i think...i dunno..

Im sure i messed up answering your question and all that is my IMO, so i could be wrong. If i didnt understand your question, then please uh, reword it

Yes Nightowl, you understood my question perfectly. And we agree completely on the matter. You must have some sort of experience to dream it.

Is there anybody out there who believes the dreams can go beyond our real life experience?

I agree to this, but only in a different perspective. I believe that the experience is basically your memory, but it's subjective. For instance, say you were dreaming that you were in 2 B.C in Rome, or you were in Egypt as a slave...you've read about that in books, you've seen these images on television and in movies...so really i think that this is where the brain gets these images, and that's why are dreams are subjective....not that we once lived in Egypt or Rome or whatever. But than again, i'm only assuming things....and you know what happens when we assume....It makes an ass out of u and me.

EDIT- FORGIVE ME, APARENTLY I DIDNT READ NIGHT OWLS RESPONSE VERY WELL....IT'S BASICALLY THE SAME IDEA.

Yes jlambie, that is another way of putting what I wanted to say. As LaBerge said that you can travel anywhere you want in your dream, he forgot to mention that it would only be the best approximation of this place that your mind can create (based on the real world experience), not the actual place.

I think it's called imagination. But yeah, that probably includes taking bits and pieces of things from experience, photos, movies, and stories, and putting them together in a way that makes sense to you. So, perceptions, like nightowl was saying.

Not that dreams make sense or anything...

I had one LD where I was teaching some sort of science lecture. I remember standing at the chalkboard speaking to a room full of college students (my peers). I hate math and science and am terrible at both so I found it so amazing what happened next. I began to speak and teach using words that I did not know. I solved equations and answered questions and did all this scientific stuff. I couldn't even comprehend what I was saying b/c it was like reading one of those scientific reports or something, but all I had to do was open my mouth and the words would come out. I remember one math problem in particular where I multiplied the numbers 210 and 147 in a split second without even thinking, I just wrote it down. I even remembered the answer...which was 30,870. When I woke up I quickly went to the calculator and multiplied the two numbers. And it was the correct answer!!! I nearly LOST it. I have no idea how I was able to do that but it really freaked me out.

Maybe it was an old old math problem from grade school or high school that I once did that my brain remembered. Maybe when we are LDing we can actually tap into those forgotten things that we have learned but that are buried deep in our subconscious somewhere?

      Lucidnina,

you might be able to tap in to lost and forgotten things, i'm no expert but i say its possible and i believe it can be done, and i also do believe we can go back in our dreams of the time of christ, egyptians..romans etc...its all imagination...have fun with it 8)
