I know I'm lucid but what exactly is happening?

Well i just realized ive been lucid a bunch of times but it wasnt surprising until i learned i can control my dreams.
I remember my phone was ringing and in my dream i take out my phone and i go, wait im dreaming. then i wake myself up to pick up my phone.
but while all this is happening im usually watching this happen like from 3rd person pov.
i can't usually remember my dreams, unless i'm partially asleep, i just dont kno what to do.
for example last night i slept really well except i don't remember dreaming too much, i just remember a part of my dream that last one second.
i want to learn how to control my dreams but i can't remember half of them.
i need help controlling my dreams, do i become like fully aware im dreaming when i do a RC? If i do an RC, is that the only way to remember a dream?

Starting a dream journal will help with that.

Control will come with practice - but once you are convinced you're dreaming your confidence in your capability to achieve anything will greatly increase your control.

If i do an RC, is that the only way to remember a dream?
Reality checking does not increase your recall. Dream journaling and lying still and recalling the dream in which you were just in is what helps you remember them. Also, if you can, wake up naturally - not with an alarm clock. That will disrupt your sleep cycle and distract you from remembering your dream.

once you know you are dreaming...do a reality check anyway.
It helps you to become even more aware, and stabilise the dream a bit too
