Dreaming of a dark room in a basement

Normally dreams don’t bother me much but this one...something about it just hasn’t set right with me since. In this dream I’m in a partially finished basement. It’s not my own basement, but I’m familiar with it. It’s the one belonging to the home that my parents just purchased out of state about a year back. In reality, I’ve been in this basement only a couple of times. In none of those visits has anything bothered me there. However in my dream, it’s different. Things to note in my dream: Unfinished walls to small rooms. The beams are present, but there’s no insulation yet facing outward towards me. The basement is clear of anything except for a wooden workbench that is set up against a far wall. To its right is a door leading into one of the small rooms. The only noticeable things around me besides the workbench are a drain in the center of the basement and a light bulb hanging crudely above for light. Beyond that it’s a standard basement of cement walls with the occasional crack and of course those tiny windows. I’m with a coworker of mine that I don’t really know well, but enough where we tease lightheartedly on a regular basis. He’s down there helping me with something, what I don’t know, but he’s afraid to go into this one room. This is the room beside the workbench. The room is pitch black. It’s darker than I have ever seen before. I give him a hard time like I normally do and agree to go with him. Though just before crossing over the threshold into it, I stop. There’s huge flies all around the corner of the workbench that juts up to the door frame and they’re swarming around my legs. At this point my coworker goes into the room anyway. I call out to him to come back because I can’t see him and I don’t want to go in with him. He doesn’t answer me. It’s then I realize I have a flashlight with me so I try shining the light into the room to see him, but it doesn’t work. The dark is just too dark and the light just fades away into nothing. I know without a doubt that there is something really awful in that room and I keep calling him to come back. I’m alone at this point, listening for him when I hear this awful splattering noise come from the room. Of course I know instantly that something awful is happened to him. At this point I wake up from the dream completely unnerved by it. I’m not exactly sure why this dream has unsettled me so much. I’ve had nightmares in the past far worse than this of things chasing me, etc. but this one for some reason just bothers me. I’m looking for some insight into this one.  Thanks to anyone who comments.

Briefly, I have found (and others have reported) that a house can be a metaphor for our self. The basement is then the deep unconscious, as opposed to the attic which is the conscious mind and the living room the heart etc (varies from person to person). The person guy there is probably a thought process or emotion or memory or whatever goes on in the unconscious mind. Perhaps in this case it's a fear of yours you've uncovered. The trouble with the unconscious is that we likely don't have words to express what's in there. If that sounds like nonsense, then the basement will mean something else to you.
