Although it would usually be best to have general background information about you in order to provide an accurate interpretation, it’s at least safe to say that your wanting to get to the bottom of this upsetting reoccurring dream is a good attitude to take because, as noted in another post, dreams continue to repeat themselves because of an important underlying issue which should be resolved in some reasonable way as soon as possible.
You could try seeing what spontaneous memories, thoughts and feelings come to mind when you focus on the image of your old apartment in Boston as it looked in the dream.
Perhaps a clue will appear which hints, for example, at a habitual attitude and way of acting that still is currently present and which maybe started when you lived in the apartment. You can also apply this technique to other images and events in the dream.
Going up the stairs to a higher level suggests the need to become more conscious of something which you are apparently too unconscious of.
This is also hinted at by the fact that you go to a bedroom, i.e. where one sleeps and is therefore “unconscious”, as well as the idea of “not knowing” anyone else was upstairs.
You don’t mention if the friend was a female, but if so, then the presence of your mother, another female, the music from the carousel and the demonically possessed girl suggest the feeling side of life may be the main issue being dealt with by this repeating dream as opposed to there being a problem with the thinking and intellectual side per se.
That is, something may be out of balance between the thinking and feeling poles within your psyche because the intellectual side is “demonizing” and “controlling” the feeling side too much for some unknown reason.
Once more, the idea is presented that a central cause of the repeating dream is mostly unconscious (the demon is under the blanket).
This approach to the series of dreams could apply whether you are a female or a male, but perhaps more so if you are a male.
If any such damaging attitude towards the emotional and values side of life exists, it might have started a year or so ago when the dreams began, maybe caused by the beginning of a kind of non-stop carousel-like cycle of “round and round” fast-paced activities related to work etc.
If this is the case, the presence of a “demon” in the dreams probably shows that a dangerous “non-human” impulse has tended to take over and a “humanizing” approach of your current life is the only way to help improve the situation.
However as mentioned, without knowing anything about you, this approach to your dreams may not fit your personal circumstances very well, but I hope these ideas can be helpful in some way.
