Repetitive dream that I had all my life

      Hello,

This is my first post. Phew, this might sound very silly, but I am trying to find a meaning of a type of dream I had all my life.

The elements always changed, however, only one thing comes back. I grew up with my grandma, just us and as a kid, I always was afraid of the dark, but most of all, about having a burglar in your house. Never happend and hope it will never will, however, in my dream, there is always somebody at the door. And how many times I am trying to close the latch, it does not work. Always the door is broken, no matter how many times I close the key in.

The feeling that I have is of fright and insecurity. And usually, I am a bit afraid of doors in the night. Just the feeling that somebody is just sitting there gives me the creeps.

A bit of help and explanation?

      Thanks a bunch

      Hello Hemingsthe,
when you were living with your grandma, was there ever such a situation in which you were afraid of opening the door or letting someone in? Maybe your grandma warned you about something? Also, if you haven't already done it maybe you could try lucid dreaming. Just keep asking yourself during the day "Am I awake?" and after a few you days you will question yourself during sleep to. It makes it able to control your dream, change the setting. You could open the door to find out that there's someone you like or some other scenario.
      Kind regards,
      Azucara

thats actually a pretty common dream that I've heard a lot over the years. Almost everyone has had dreams of someone/something following them and trying to get in their room. Its essentially our evolutionary instinct to be considering possible threats while we are sleeping. Since being asleep is naturally when animals are vulnerable to attacks, they've evolved to consider possible threats during sleep. So I know its kind of unsettling, but its a pretty natural part of being a human. How often do you have this dream?

Thanks for the reply, I will respond here to the both of you.

No, I don't remember having anything like this, however, I do recall two "incidents".

      1. I remember I was on the stairs and went inside and after a few minutes, someone knocked very loud and aggresive at the door saying: I am selling FISH, open up! I was 11 at that time, but scared the crap outta me.

      2. Earlier, I was home with my grandma and at some point someone rang the door and my grandma went, she asked who is it and said: We are from a TV station, we want to ask you some questions. My grandma denied to open the door saying she has no keys. Days passed and heard that someone was robbed by someone who used that method.

Maybe those moment reached the back of my head and remained there?

I have these dreams for 12-15 years now. If I have a nightmare, 1 of 2 is about the door. I dislike sleeping in places where the door is not that safe. I did not try lucid dream, I don't want to do that. Never had problems sleeping, just the usual I cannot go to sleep early and so on.

      Thank you!

      Hello Hemingsthe,
yes it's possible that these two events are the cause of your nightmares. Also one should never forget that a door represents an opening. It's a weak spot. It's too bad you won't consider lucid dreaming. It can really help a lot with recurring dreams and nightmares.
      Kind regards,
