Its a Defense Mechanism kicking in. This is the result of sleeping in public. What happens when we sleep is that an Astral Component of ourselves rises up and watches over us... stands guard. It anything of concern happens, then it quickly pops back in, which gives that galting feeling of falling which wakes one up.

Now you might not think that this Astral Component has any real reason to be waking you up, but it is up and looking around and is aware of the whole picture. IT has a reason for not leaving you slumbering on a desk. Perhaps it recognizes that your friends are about to play a practical joke on your unconscious body, and it wishes to save you (another) embarrassment.

Anyway, the Astral Projection or Out of Body Experience people make use of this reflex for Astral Projection. They train this Astral Component into handing over its perceptual memories. One is supposed to start modestly, with trying to remember just one thing and instantly popping back in before one has time to forget. The exercise, I believe, is to close one's eyes while taping a playing card to a wall across your room, then you lay down and relax and try to keep in the Astral Component and float on over, take a look at the card, and come back. Exercises such as these promotes more conscious awareness and memory access to one's Astral Component. You'd be good at it.
