      A Lucid Dream of Enlightenment

Hi. I just had this really powerful lucid dream that I thought i'd share. Any help with interpreting it's meaning would be appreciated. To give some background I have been engaging in dreamwork on and off for a few years now. I feel that it has made a huge difference in my life. Anyways lately I have been getting very much into mysticism, especially buddhism and kabbalah along with various altered states of conciousness such as Lucid Dreaming to help attain a deeper spirituality in my life. Anyways now to the dream. I was with my friend and his new girlfriend (he had just dumped his old one for her in this dream for some strange reason) when I started to become lucid. Anyways when I thought I might be dreaming I performed the reality test of flying in the dream and saw that I could do it so once I knew I was lucid I ventured off from them. I started going around this hotel that was like the coolest hotel and place to be at. It was really beautiful and I was flying around it. Then I came across lots of really beautiful food full of fruits and the best chocolates. I was floating around there and eating there for a while and was thinking how I wish I knew more of what I should be doing during this lucid dream except just eating great food which was loads of fun but ultimately trivial. Then I started hearing a tape play directing me through my dream. Well I decided to make things a little more interesting and decided to venture outside the hotel even though I really enjoyed it there with the food and all. Anyways I was really high up in the hotel close to outer space, so when I went outside to fly there I was surounded by beautiful stars and cosmos and was traveling towards space when that tape that was playing for me then told me to head further upward towards the light. I was flying in outer space surrounded by the beautiful cosmos and heading into the light and all of a sudden everything started to become really white and I was blinded by the light which was all I saw and I felt like my body dissolved into the light that completely surrounded me and I had the feeling of perfect bliss. It was amazing! I couldn't maintain my lucidity much after that, but I recall trying to replay that part of the tape that was telling me to go towards the light to help clarify its message with regards to what it had said because I couldn't believe what had just happened to me and wanted to be able to do it again. Anyways I feel that I had a transcendental experience. It was like I lost my ego in the white light and felt nothing but a pure blissful ecstasy. I general in my waking life I would consider myself to be a very happy person generally. There have been times in the past where I had mental breakdowns which I consider to have been spiritual crises where I had hit rock bottom and I have recovered greatly from them by this point and see myself as a renewed person after having recovered from these breakdowns which has greatly inspired my spiritual journey. Anyways this lucid dream has been a great inspiration for me towards continuing my journey on the spiritual path, but i'm not sure how much meaning I should attribute to it in my waking life. Could this be a sign that I am attaining enlightenment or at least a guidepost towards it, similar to a compass or north star that can keep me on track? Ever since I have had this dream in addition to the entusiasm it gave me to continue my spiritual path, I also feel more humble and have even less desire for material pursuits than I did before the dream. I also have a greater sense of ease feeling that everything will be ok. Before I felt more of a need to be in control of my environment, but I feel that by this point that need has greatly subsided. Anyways any help in interpreting this lucid dream would be appreciated.

      Matt

      Dear Dreamconnector,

You have probably heard the Wisdom of the Light Triad - "First the Light is You. Then You are in the Light. Then You are the Light".

I once had a dream in which the Dream Scene in front of me, some 10 or 15 meters in front of me just tore open, after there had been purple-violet ripples and waves in the air to show that there had been some disturbance, and from this Rend in Space out poured the Pure White Light. It looked like burning Magneseum reflected in a Chrome Mirror. Then the White Light formed up into an Elaborate Statuesque Swan, the size of a large Serving Platter, and then shot into my forehead. And again and again and again, faster and faster, but each time the White Light Swan was less elaborate until finally, at a rate of a few each second the White Light 'Swans' were just simple "Vees", the way a child will draw a flying bird. That was "The Light is in You" phase of the White Light Triad.

I've had dream of being in the Light. Once while reciting the "Hail Mary" Prayer I was caught up in a Spiritual Vortex that drew me up into the White Light of Heaven, and when I came out the other side I was inexplicably chanting not exactly the "Hail Mary" anymore, but was apparently given a modification -- "Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the World is with Thee". When I realized that I was not saying the traditional "Hail Mary" it set off a trigger and I found myself saying, as though by Program, "Hail Mary Full of Grace, World Lifter".

In another Dream I passed through the Light above the Altar of a Church. and in another Dream I passed through the Light as I flew over some Sacred River.

Well, that's two angles of the Triad completed.

      Hi Leo

Thanks for sharing your interesting experiences and guidance. You seem to have had some powerful experiences on your dreaming journeys that resonate with some of my own experiences especially the one I just shared. That's an interesting quote you shared and I feel it has shed some light on my experience in this dream. I just had this dream a couple nights ago and I feel renewed in many ways after having it like I described in my original post. I seem to be fascinated by this whole issue of the 'light.' I have come across it in many mystical traditions and surrendering to it seems to be the 'key' to enlightenment, which is what I experienced in the dream. I plan on exploring this much further as I feel that surrendering to the 'light' is my ultimate life purpose. I have had other similar although not as lucid or as powerful dreams that have symbolized this surrendering to the light as well. I suspect that this is also humanities life purpose and it is embedded in our collective unconcious. We all may just need some guidance here and there and this Lucid dream really helped guide me into experiencing it firsthand with full lucid awareness of what I was experiencing. I don't think i'll ever be the same again. I feel that I had lots of 'clear light' awareness inside of me before this dream I just had and that I was heading on the right path, but this dream seems to have just advanced my experience of the 'light' to another level. It's a good thing I didn't just keep eating that amazing food in the hotel when I was having my dream. Experiencing the white light in the vast cosmos was a far more rich experience than the chocolate cake. Although the cake was good.

      Oh!

We have some synchronicity going on. yesterday some wonderful scholar from India (actually Little India -- New Jersey in the United States) posted regarding the Gayatri Mantra.

One does the Gayatri Mantra for the Light.

Oh! Please allow me to extend my endorsement for these people. Often I run off On Line to quickly research subjects which I should know everything about already, and I do, mostly, but more than a few times I have ended up on these above mentioned Sites, where I have found the research to be tirelessly complete. Indeed, there is a breed of Indian Scholarship that considers it a Sacred Duty to leave nothing out. This man has even published a book on Dreams, comprising everything that had ever been written or thought concerning dreams, though his sources are too dated to even include a word on Lucid Dreaming, still, it would show you all that dreaming truly existed before Lucid Dreamings incursion into the Field, and that people trudged on anyway, using various forms of Suggestion to do what people now do with Lucidity. here is the URL... take a look

      http://www.awgp.org/english/books/sleep_dreams.pdf

But specifically, now, this fine group of Scholars is telling us of the Gayatri Mantra. It is truly the Mantra of Kings and Brahmins. Since Westerners are considered outside of Caste Restrictions, somehow it has been deemed acceptable that we be allowed to repeat this Highest of complex mantras.

It does take awhile to learn, comprising about 24 sylables. Now, it must be something of an inside joke in India, as every Yogin, Guru and Scholar will absolutely insist that the Gayatri is powerless unless done exactly in the most strigently correct manner. But every time one hears it, depending upon regional accent or individual nuance, it is different. No two Gurus seem to agree. And yet the Gurus each seem empowered and genuine enough. Besides, it has worked for me, a Westerner, with my own odd pronounciations, and so it could not possibly be of critical importance to get every single sound absolutely similar to what we hear. I suppose it is like language, that it only has to be close enough that it be recognized, and in this case, Recognized by the Gods. And in 24 sylables, I suppose that the Gods can eventually discern what it is we are jabbering about, that we are intoning the Royal and Holy Gayatri Mantra, and reward us accordingly.

In my own case, after Religiously chanting the Gayatri morning and night for a year, I had a Lucid Dream in which I was initiated into the White Light of the Order of the Paramahansa Swan. Oh... here let me cut and paste over the essential segment of this Dream: Becoming Lucid, I asked the driver to pull over so I could get out. I noticed that I was not wearing shoes, which, of course, plainly means that I was on Holy Ground, and so I looked around to see what was so special. I was on the outskirts of a City, near the rail yards and gravel pits. Just meters away was an old rusty iron railway overpass. But it was all exquisitely beautiful and so I had no doubt about it being Holy Ground.

In keeping with the sacredness of the moment I decided to Meditate. I intoned an AUM and arose up off the ground to hover a few meters off the ground in quiet serenity. And, true to the Guru’s words, not seconds transpired when the air shimmered in waves and ripples and turned a wonderful shade of violet-pink. I was in a state of curious expectancy about it all when just then the space some 10 meters in front of me simply tore open and out poured the Pure White Light, like magnesium burning before a chromium mirror, bright and real.

The substance of the Light quickly took up a form – a Paramahansa Swan… not a living bird but a very ornate statuesque representation of one. It was large – more than a meter high and wide. And it was amazingly beautiful – in the brightest White Light but still one could discern the textures of the shapes and detail. But there was little time for amazement when the Swan shot across the distance between us and penetrated into my forehead. And then a new one formed up to replace it, and it shot over into my forehead as well… and again and again and again, each time more quickly, but each time the ornate and elaborate Paramahansa Swan became simpler, more streamlined. As they formed up more rapidly, they became plainer and plainer. Finally they were coming at a rate of 8 or 10 per second, and the birds were mere ‘Vees’, like as in the way young children draw birds flying in the sky, as two joining lines tapering outward. And they were all flying into my forehead.

Now, although it takes some time to learn, once one has it, it rattles off easily enough and is easy enough to do 3 times in the morning and 3 times at night.... taking less than a minute. The hardcore Hindus would insist upon 9 times or even 108 times, but I have found that Enthusiasts often exaggerate everything, and one can ordinarily take all recommendations for Meditation Time or Mantra Repetitions and divide them down by almost a factor of 10 and still derive great benefit. Also, as my Dream Gurus have instructed me, any meditation done in a Dream, even for a few seconds, is worth a thousand hours of Waking Practice. So it is that if one gets the Gayatri Mantra down well enough to do during a Dream or while in a deep sleepy trance, then just a few repetitions would be all one could ever need.

Again, my endorsements for these kind and diligent people.

Oh, and let me point out that these kind and diligent people seem to be hailing from New Jersey in the United States. It is a curious fact but New Jersey seems to be transforming itself into some Little India. Already the best Publishing House for Indian Literature is not in India at all but is located in Voorhees New Jersey -- the "Indian Club" it is called. Perhaps I should explain, that India has not just one language native to its soil, but quite a few complete languages along with their patois and dialects. There were some moves to make Hindi a National Language, but all of the various Regions arose up and threatened rebellion if they would have some other regional language forced upon them. But as convenience would have it, English had been something of a Universal Language owing to English Bureaucratic Administration, over the span of some 3 or 4 hundred years. So most scholarly works written for more than local consumption, that is, for the complete audience of all of India, is written in English. yes, some thought was put toward making Ancient Sanskrit a National Language, but we have seen what such a strategy had done for Israel with their Hebrew -- it had cut them off from the rest of the World and insulated them into a violent and hostile provincial enclave. India has decided to be Higher Minded and has chosen for its National Language a tongue whereby the rest of the World would have no difficulty discerning what was on their Mind. But as far as Israel is concerned, nobody but some other well studied Jew has any idea what plots they may be hatching against the rest of the World, though they are not a subtle People and we can fairly guess that they bear for the rest of the World the same Good Will they have shown Palestine.

But this Post concerns India... and New Jersey that has become India's own Colony in the West. And since their National Language is so accessable to us all, we can be relieved to hear that their intentions are most Peaceful and benevolent. They are a wonderful People.

Dreamconnector that's quite a privillaged experience you had! You clearly have great spiritual needs, perhaps was born that way, and are lucky enough to feed your soul what it needed.
The hotel would be a temporary phase, and the food would be probably materialist indulgence, which was good but not the best thing for you. The tape recorded voice may have been Buddhism itself.
You were very lucky to have this dream, you changed within it because you reached a level. You satisfied forever some of your materialistic desires by eating all that food, then reached that enlightment. Good for you!

Thank you inspirer for that interpretation and encouragement! I have gotten much more into spirituality since I have had this dream. I have had a few really life changing dreams and this was one of them. I don't know where i'd be without these dreams.

Those are some interesting links Leo and a fascinating dream. Those people seem like a good group and a very positive force on this earth. That was an interesting Mantra they have. I can't wait to try it in my next lucid dream. Maybe it will be my next life changing experience!

      Honestly...

I've always found it difficult to remember Prayers and Mantras when dreaming, even when Lucid. And the Gayatri is in about 24 syables... a real tongue twister.

So I've always stuck with the shorter Mantras and Prayers. Just plain old AUM still does rather well during dreams.

The way I see it as that the Gayatri during Waking does all of the Coarse Work in the Physical Material Plane. But then in Dreaming, where things are so much more direct, I just do the AUM. So far it has been working.

But if you can memorize the Gayatri and actually get the entire thing out in a Dream, do let us all know how that works out for you.

Oh... just so that people will know what we are talking about...

      Below is the Gayatri Mantra:

      Aum Bhur Bhuvah Svah
      Tat Savitur Varenyam
      Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
      Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

the pronounciations are straight forward enough... and as I have pointed out above, though everyone says there is only one way to do it right, they all do it differently, and if you have one more way to do it then everybody else, then I am sure it will work as well for you as it does for them. It worked for me, and I am not among the foremost Sanskrit Scholars in the World.

This particular Mantra is very good at invoking the White Light. In India it has been restricted to the Highest Castes, but Westerners, as being outside of the Caste System, have some effective Dispensation to do whatever it is they want, and so if we can manage to learn it, then we are permitted to use it.
