      why do we dream?

Hi all, last night my dream was quite clear. I had to go up to the top of a very high building, i think it was in the us. I was quite frightened, as i thought i hope there was not an earthquake of anything. When i got to the top i was in a market. I did not want to look over the edge, but i kept going near the edge. Then i woke up.

I could say you were making your way to the top in life, and becoming some what of a success, but when you are at the top, you do not want to look down or think about where you've come from, how you got there etc.

Going near the edge, may be a fear you could go back to square one.

Don't know what you think, but tell me if that sounds right to you.

There are theories. But no one truly knows why we dream. Scientists have been trying to figure it out, but there isn't anything about why we dream that we are sure of yet. The more widely accepted theory as it is, is that its a time for the subconscious mind to work things out that we're not able to otherwise.

That sounds like a load of bull. That would indicate that the sub has a greater set of priorities then evolution would allow man.

The problem with people is that they don’t know how to remove themselves from the equation. Everything they think of relates to me in some way shape or form. And when constructing a theory you just can’t do that, especially with the contextual aspects of today’s society. What we have to do is get to the roots and work up from there. I still think my theory is the best one out there. I use a combination of pattern matching, cross referencing, common sense, philosophy for truth and universal rules of nature. The mind works of the basis of combining ideas. And when constructing theories you have to do the same thing. You can’t segregate ideas for they are limited and you will never get to the source. Society has left people with linear thought and not much else. However if you look at every genius in history, they all think from a destructing frame of mind. And they stand out for a reason.

It’s not the content but what the mind is trying to accomplish. People need to start putting the why to the what and really focus on the foundations of what dreams are, not just what they represent. It’s the only way to move forward.

Hardly a load of bull. We do much more during the day and our waking lives, our conscious mind handles this. We sleep to revitalize the mind and body, why is it so hard to believe that the subconscious, which is now dominant, has more time to work things out? Our subconscious clearly does more work while we're asleep rather than while we're awake.

Assuming your theory to be the best out there is arrogant. Not to say its wrong, but demeaning the hundreds of scientists who dedicate their lives and get payed to research these things for one reason: because they're good at it, is disrespectful. Just because you write a lot about an idea doesn't make it a good one, and while you may not see them yet, I'm sure someone will be able to find many holes in your theory.

And there are scientists, people who are trying to find out what dreams are and why we dream, who are trying to figure out their foundation rather than just interpreting them. The theory that the subconscious mind sorts things out while we sleep actually makes a lot of sense should you actually take the time to look into it.

I'm not assaulting your theory or ideas, nor am I saying you're wrong. But there are many more ideas and theories out there, and theres no reason to think yours is so much more special, especially when you reject the idea of these other ideas and pass them off as bull just to reinforce your own. Really, take sometime to look into these ideas, there are people strong in the field of Oneironology who know what they are talking about who have been working on these theories their entire lives.

Our subconscious mind is always in play, although we don not notice it during the day when our conscious mind is the key thought centre. The subconscious mind generally picks up on things the conscious mind does not.
When we go to sleep so does our conscious thought. This is when the subconscious mind is able to project its thoughts.
The subconscious mind is more emotionally connected and more vulnerable to the impact of various emotions than its counterpart the conscious mind. This is the reason so many of our dreams can deliver a powerful message.
When we dream we are hurting it is our subconscious mind warning us of the emotional hurt we are suffering but are not paying any attention to.
Dream symbols such as food are translated by similarities in thought patterns between the subconscious mind and the conscious.
Take food for example, an easy one. Our conscious mind sees food as physical nourishment, our subconscious mind translates this as mental nourishment or knowledge.
The state of the food is also important. Our conscious mind sees stale food as old and tasteless and our subconscious mind tanslates this into a sign we are not feeding ourselves with quality 'brain food' or knowledge.

Our dreams are our way of getting in touch with our spiritual and emotional core. They are very important in the ongoing development and expanditure of both minds, conscious and subconscious.

Well I think that dreams have many and varied functions. It is a mistakle to believe that they have one simple function. I think that they vcan link to premonitions and higher forces. Yet many many dreams link simply to the brain and thoughts. We store up info in short term memory during the day. Then at night we begin the enourmous process of working through these new memories. We assimilate them into long term emotions and thought processes. Dreams symbolise the cionclusions or highlights of these reevaluations. They capture conceptul and intellectual conclusions. They show us how our brain stores information. So a situation in a dream which involves great heardship probably refers to some situation with a similar sense of real life hardship.

You dream probably relates to new thoughts and feelings emerging the day of the dream. skyscrapers often link to demanding situations or perhaps the need to stand tall and resist others.

Often when you get a dream its best to write doqwn all the thought processes in your mind. The little thoughts about yesterday? The new feelings as you approach the new day? The little changes of emphasis within your life - perhaps an increasing distrust of someone or something like that.

      ------------------------
Dream interpreting is not an easy task. In some ways its like trying to work out what subject inspired someone’s poem by studying the metaphors within it. It can be done though. But you only achieve any level of success when you interpret your own dreams.
Generally dreams are very much in the present day. They will often represent specific thoughts either as we look back to the previous day or as we focus on the day to come. So a snake for example symbolises something bad and in the context of a dream analysis will generally point to some problem or trap either that you nearly fell into yesterday or that you worry about in the near future. But either way there are not that many problems and traps and difficult situations from yesterday. Usually you will be able to highlight one thing.
So try to look at dreams simply. A good dream will show your happy state of mind and so thats really not that difficult to trace.
