      recurring dream

there's this recurring dream I have:

I'm driving, and I get in a car crash. When I crash, something goes through my neck- like a large piece of glass or a pole or something.

After the crash I can't talk. The doctors say I'll never be able to talk again. One day, though, I'm sitting there and I start humming. from there I teach myself how to talk again. but it's not a normal kind of talking, it's something completely unique to me that no one else can replicate.

then all of a sudden I can sing. I can sing so well that I become a famous singer.

...The emotions of the dream go from complete shock to complete despair to complete pride, but I've had it many times over and I'm not really sure what it means.

Maybe you have a awesome abillity to sing and you haven't discovered it yet!

Yet I really don't know, that does not sound like a fun dream and it sounds insanely vivid
if you can read this then you are about to be punched

Sometimes dreams deal with separate issues and sometimes they tie in with other issues. Keep a journal of your dreams noting all symbols including colors and qualities (I once dreamed of a neon snake, a stuffed animal type, and also in that dream were neon lights, so neon colors meant something).

Write down any thoughts or feelings you experience that you associate with them. See if the symbolism doesn't repeat in other dreams. See if themes, or patterns don't emerge. The elements of your dreams usually symbolize combinations of things when they aren't clear what they do represent. For example, an element may represent how you feel about something, your understanding, how much you know about that thing, child hood beliefs mixed with adult abstract thinking (creating a conflict in understanding), and many other things. On the other hand, some things are very clear what they represent. If you've been feeling out of place, like a fish out of water, you might dream of a fish flopping around outside his bowl. This is especially likely if you use a cliché like that regularly.

Maybe you are supposed to be speaking on another's behalf (working as an advocate-unique to you as you might have a calling in that field), and you may do it so well "you sing", meaning you are among the best in that field.

Voice is a word that has many meanings, and to have your voice cut off, then returned in a unique capacity is worth thinking about. In this dream your voice is cut off abruptly. In another dream you described, you don't have the freedom to speak as freely and intimately with someone as you once did (you've been cut off.)

So, stay aware of other dreams you have as some can be extensions of other dreams, or suggest ways of dealing with struggles you're facing in waking life, or even occur to make you aware that you're ready to face certain obstacles, or expand your understanding of things, in general.

thanks very much for your insight, Micki.

I have started writing down things that stand out in my dreams, as you recommended, and I'm working on noticing patterns/trying to decipher the symbols in a less one-dimensional way.

Interesting what you said about the being cut-off part. I think that may be a common theme--some kind of disconnect from the people/things around me.

Notice that it's more abrupt and severe than just having a microphone cut off, or losing your voice to laryngitis. It was a life-changing, if not a life-stopping event that caused your loss--a pretty severe one. You're definitely trying to direct your attention to something.

Compare the degree of how events happen in dreams with other ways to make a point, and it gives a clue how important it is to you. What do you stand to lose or gain (what's the risk or gain) if you try to speak up about something. It's very big to you.

In the dream you started humming, which is a soft, pleasing, non-intrusive way of making yourself heard. Maybe you really want to drop some hints or test the waters by expressing your position on something but very gently. Maybe you ultimately believe that if you do you will gain the strength, or be given an opportunity to speak out, and may get a result that will make you sing, or prove to someone that you really can accomplish something they made you feel you couldn't do.

Have fun with this. In most situations it's an adventure in self-discovery.
