      Weird dream about narwhals...

Ok, in case you don't know, narwhals are these huge, toothed whales with horns on their head. Here are a few pictures:

OK, anyway, these things are massive, and a few nights ago I had a dream about them. At first, I felt ice cold. Like, the coldest I had ever felt. Then I realized I was underwater, and looked around to see something. The salt of the water stung my eyes, but I could see that the water was completely black and murky. I spun in circles, attempting to find a glimpse of light, and finally oriented myself in a way that I could see a glimmer from the sun above. I began swimming up as fast as possible, realizing right away that I was VERY deep underwater, and loosing oxygen fast. I was about 20 feet from the surface, and rising fast, when I could faintly make out a HUGE narwhal slowly moves right above me, from the left side to the right, making a strange, whale-like moaning sound. This made me open my mouth in fear, as it was huge (did I say it was huge enough yet?), and water began to flow into my mouth. I screamed underwater, and swam as fast as possible for the surface. When I made my way to the surface I broke through to air and spent about 2 minutes gasping and vomiting water. When I began to regain a steady breath, I looked around to see where I was. It was a very cold, almost arctic climate, water all around. Seeing it was arctic, I looked around for a glacier, or any sight of land. I turned in a full circle and realize there was nothing there. I was floating alone in the middle of nowhere with at least one massive creature that had probably noticed me by now. Then I head the moan again, this time louder, and turned toward the source. A huge wave was about a bit far off, and after a huge splash two more surfaced, and I could make out that their horns were covered in blood. As they when back underneath to leave me with the sound of my increasing breath rate, I began swimming in another direction, when I heard the sound again, this time below me. I panicked, and as I began to hyperventilate, I felt a sharp pain in my foot. As I saw a cloud of blood rising in the water around me, I heard the noise one last time as I was pulled underneath the water.

Freaky, eh? I have no idea where it came from, as I have no interest in these animals whatsoever. Anyone who can interpret this dream has my everlasting respect.

Thanks, hopefully you aren't too freaked out

Hey, Nic, welcome to DV. I hope I'm able to help you out a bit in understanding your dream. On a dreaming site that I 'grew up' on, dream interpretations were done in a "If it were my dream" style, so I'll continue that tradition here.

If it were my dream, I would consider that this dream has an emotional message from the very beginning. In dreams, bodies of water often symbolize the emotional state of the dreamer, and since I'm under water (so much so that the water is black and murky) I realize that I may be feeling isolated and alone in a matter that I'm facing, whether the matter is physical or emotional. I can't see any light at all, and it isn't until I finaly find a glimmer of light and head towards it that I realize how very much I'm "in deep".

I try to get to the top, but I realize as I'm getting closer that I'm not alone, but rather that there are problems surrounding me, huge narwhals with their intimidating looking horns (they're actually a tooth). The normally beautiful sound they make terrifies me, and as I open my mouth in fear I end up swallowing the water. I try to flee from these 'problems'/'enemies', but when I get to the surface I realize how very completely alone I am in this matter. There isn't even a block of ice for me to cling onto for dear life.

I may have gotten temporary reprieve, but my problems come back to me, and now they're worse than ever, bearing their bloody tooth at me menacingly. They disappear back into the water, and I try to escape again. Before I can get anywhere, though, I feel my foot get stabbed, and as I watch a cloud of my blood rise in the water, I'm pulled back into its depths, alone and at the mercy of my problems/enemies.

Now that I've recounted it in a way as to provide you with one potential interpretation of the dream, I'll outline some points I picked up on during the dream. If I had to guess, I'd say this dream is a sign that you're facing some physical or emotional hardship that you can't see any way out of or any end to that doesn't involve your "death".

*The fact that you're in the middle of the ocean says that you're alone in the dark depths of your emotions, or perhaps you're so deep in a problem you're facing that you can't see your way out.
*You have a sense of isolation going on in the dream. Perhaps you don't feel that anyone understands you and/or can help you in whatever you're facing?
*You've got narwhals after you. This perhaps may be your mind's way of symbolizing problems coming after you, or it may be your mind's way of symbolizing people you feel are against you. Since they are creatures of the water, though, the chances are that they're internal to yourself or are of your causing.
*You try to escape, but are pulled back under. This should be self-explanatory.

Now, I'll put a disclaimer here. I may be completely off on this translation. Dream symbolry is very personal, differing from person to person based on a huge number of things. I am simply giving you what I think to be the best interpretation based on the general tone of the dream and the more universal and situational symbols present. That said, I'd be very interested in finding out how close to correct my translation is (or isn't).

      All the best,
      rR

      Woah!

Thanks for the quick response! It is amazing how much of that applies to my own life! I understand the symbolism, but can anyone explain this:

Why narwhals? Why not sharks or dolphins, or something else?

      Thanks again, awesome interpretation!

There's no reall way to tell that one. It could be you saw them on tv or in a book somewhere and your mind just stored it away and called them up in a dream. It could be something completely different. (In any case, they are scarier than a normal whale, what with the giant horn and all.) It also may have something to do with the fact that you're less likely to just take a narwhal as a random dream like you might a shark attack.
