      Smile Burns's Dream Journal

Well after almost 4 years of being on the forum, I am finally starting a dream journal. My recall has been hit or miss lately so we'll see how it goes.

In the DJ I kept on my computer (microsoft word doc), I always date and title my dreams.

      Color codes:

      • Lucid parts in blue.
      • Dream signs in pink.
      • At the end of a dream, if I have any comments or interpretations, that is done in purple.

      On with my first entry!

3/20/08 - Matchbox Twenty and Ex Boyfriends

The first thing I remember is sitting in a small, crowded bar. It's dark but not smokey and I am sitting in a chair on the floor facing a small stage. I am sitting behind a lot of big guys - like biker bar guys - so I can't really see the band. Matchbox Twenty is my favorite band ever and I've seen them in concert a couple times (IRL), so I don't need to actually watch this time. I just want to enjoy the music. So I slump down in my chair, prop my feet up on a chair next to me, and close my eyes. The song "Damn" is playing and I am grooving to Rob Thomas' voice. I can get lost in his voice.

Then I open my eyes and turn around to see how many other people are as into the music as I am. Straight behind me, sitting side by side, are two ex-boyfriends - both of whom (funnily enough) are named Jim. I see one first, then look to his left and see the other sitting there. They are both looking at me. I sit up straighter in my seat and say, "What the fuck?", but don't make an effort to go talk to them. I prefer to enjoy the music. So I turn around and close my eyes again...

I don't know why I dreamed of Matchbox Twenty and the song "Damn", other than "damn" is what I've been thinking to myself all day... for reasons I won't go into here. And the ex-boyfriends.. I'm not sure. I saw one IRL a few weeks ago after not seeing him for 8 years and that was a real reality check moment if there ever was one. Seeing them in the dream didn't phase me though because I was focusing more on the song.

Yes! Another dream journal to add to my subscription list!

I've always wondered what a Burns lucid looks like. I'm looking forward to finding out.

Well the word "Damn" would certainly be the first thing that would come to my mind if that happened to me! I admire the fact that it didn't faze you in the slightest.. just goes to prove that it was THEIR loss!

      Yay, a Burns Journal!

Looked for the song on Youtube (don't shoot me, I didn't know Matchbox 20) and I like their songs!

Nice dream, I like dreams with music in them, but they are quite rare.
Do you dream 'with' music often?

Thanks, Sara No, I don't dream about music often (though I have dreamed about Rob Thomas a fair few times ), but after pondering it more today, I think I realize why I had that dream.

Matchbox 20 is my favorite band. I have always loved Rob Thomas as a singer/songwriter and for some reason, his music has always got me through tough times in my life. When I'm feeling really lost and depressed, their music and lyrics just speaks to me, and gets me through. When I broke up with one of the Jims that was in this dream (he had cheated on me), the Mad Season album is what got me through.

Now that I have just experienced another depressing event in my life, I brought Matchbox 20 into my dream, closed my eyes, and let it wash over me, like I've always done in the past. It all makes sense now!

Wow, I'm liking this DJ thing! Thanks for checking it out, guys! Hope to post more soon

Hey! Congrats on your first entry Burns!

Of all the Matchbox 20 tunes I got on my iPod, Damn is not one of them, unfortunately. But, I know what you mean about music being able to seem to 'speak' to you sometimes. Matchbox 20 was one of those groups which somehow progressively grew on me. Like, first song came out and I was like, "hey, pretty good. One hit wonder." Then the next song came out , "hey, those dudes again - not bad. Must be a fad, they'll soon pass." Then after the third "hit", I'm like "ok, who the fk are these guys?!". LOL!

Anyway, I believe music really behaves as an extension of our sense of sound in that it can really tie in with our memory. They say that the olfactory system is the most powerful when it comes to calling up memories. Smells tend to constantly remind us of something or someone. Sounds by themselves are not so powerful, but when put into a song it can leave quite an impression. It can be a good and bad thing. Nothing worse than having a bad experience while listening to a song you love. UGH! It's like you always have to be on the lookout for that kind of thing.

Thanks, Joe! I don't know why I love their music so much, or why I'm so in love with Rob Thomas, but something about it just connects with me. I'm glad they are still going strong with their music - and the weird thing is that when I was researching the band's history a few years ago, I found out they were originally called "Tabitha's Secret" - now if that's not a "sign", I don't know what is!

I know exactly what you mean - I got into a bad car accident one time listening to a certain song, and every time I hear it now, it literally makes me sick to my stomach and I'm a nervous wreck. I know it's irrational but I can't help it! It's a strong connection that I'll probably have forever.

3/21/08 - Short Country Club Lucid, and Messing with the Neighbors

I'm at an expensive country club like the Birmingham Country Club where we go for dinner sometimes. Me and some friends (not sure who) are in the big room with the fireplace and there are a lot of stuffed animals (like big game animals that were taxidermied) around the room. One guy is bragging about how he shot and killed each animal and describes each "adventure" in detail. I realize I am dreaming so I figure I will have some fun. I turn around and point my finger at a large brown bear in the corner and change it into a humungous buffalo. Then I hold out my palm and move it slightly upward to get the buffalo to rise off the floor and drift slowly forward so it is in a more prominent position in the room. I feel like I have good control. My friends are laughing as the guys turns around and sees the buffalo, but cannot explain how it got there, so he just decides someone else must have shot it and moves on to the next animal he supposedly shot. I don't remember anything after this.

Another dream, James and I are driving in a subdivision and arrive at a house of some people we don't like (I have no idea IRL who). No one is home so we get into the house somehow and turn on the sprinkler system so it floods the house and yard. Just then a car pulls in the driveway, it is the teenage daughter and some friends, and they are looking shocked. Then a minivan pulls in behind them which is the parents. I shout to James that they are home and we both make a break for it. We run out the door and get into our truck and drive over the yard to get away. The dad gets out of the minivan and starts chasing us. He is wearing an 80's style windbreaker suit. I keep telling James to go faster because the guy is gaining on us! For a moment I think he's going to catch us, then we start going faster and he gives up.

No explanation for either of these dreams - totally random! Especially the second one. I have no idea who those people were or why we flooded their house and yard.

hehehe, so that is what lucid-burns-fun looks like

Sounds like you have a perfect, precise control. Is it always like that?
How did you learn to change objects in that way?

LOL. Great dreams. You should have made the buffalo come alive. The guy would have probably pissed himself to turn around and be staring at a live bufflalo.

Nice job on the control, too.

Thanks, Sara! My control isn't always reliably good, but I've found that if I either use a magic wand, or imagine my finger as a wand, it usually works better. I think of the powers of a Harry Potter wand and it works!

I don't have a specific wand (i.e. holly and pheonix feather ), but I have used spells before like "accio" and "lumos" but I mainly use the idea of a wand for whatever I want to control or change in the dream, not necessarily HP-related... though the HP ones are the most fun

3/22/08 - Sinking Raft, and Lucid Moment

I don't know how this dream started but I find myself on a large inflatable raft that resembles a pontoon-type boat. It has a motor on it though like the ones on the airboats you ride in the Florida Everglades. I am in the raft with about 5 other people, and we are zooming along the surface of a huge body of water - not an ocean, but an extremely large and deep lake. I can see the shore on all sides in the distance.

I see a large fin break the surface of the water - definitely a shark - and it comes dangerously close to the raft. I can see the dark outline of the huge animal under the surface. But it keeps on going and doesn't bother us. We are moving fast along the lake, the wind howling in our ears. A little ways on a huge sailfish leaps out of the water and sails across our path so close that we almost it hit. It's fins are huge and look sharp. Shortly after, another one jumps out a little further away. Then another comes up near the side and I hear the raft puncture.

We are still moving extremely fast and I can feel the raft deflating under us. I grab hold of the seat and try to hang on as material is getting loose and flapping in the wind. I am yelling for them to stop the raft but no one can hear me over the howling wind. I loose my grip and fall into the water.

It is not cold, but not warm. I go under the surface and open my eyes. It appears that I'm in a huge pool, like over 30 feet deep and so wide I can't see the sides, but I can see a wall in front of me about 25 yards. The water is slightly murky like lake water and I can see a lot of fish and large sailfish and sharks swimming through the water. There are also people swimming and diving as well. I keep sinking before I realize I need to swim to the side to get out.

I take a deep breath and realize I can breathe without a problem. I take another breath, and another. Then I realize I am dreaming. But as soon as this thought hits me, I wake up.

Breathing underwater is a dreamsign of mine, but it took a couple breaths for me to actually become lucid. Too bad I woke up right away afterward.

3/23/08 - Linkin Park Concert in Detroit

My sister and I are going to a Linkin Park concert in downtown Detroit. We park and walk to a small building which leads to the building where the concert is being held. We walk inside and Oneironaut is the bouncer at the door. He is checking everyone's ID's and guns. We get up to him in line and we chat for a minute, then he asks for our guns. My sister pulls a little pistol out of her purse and hands it over. O examines it, makes sure it's in good working condition and then hands it back over. I tell him I didn't bring mine because I thought you weren't allowed to bring guns to concerts. He says they've changed to rules, and that I should bring mine next time to protect myself in case something happens.

We walk past him into the next building and it is like a wooden barn. It's cold and drafty and there are lots of small rooms with no view of the audience or stage. My sister leads us to a small room where some people are already sitting, all bundled up and freezing. I ask her how we're supposed to see the band, abd she said you don't, but you can hear the music. I think this is such a waste of money on tickets! I'm cold and miserable, didn't bring my gun, and can't even see the band! I don't really remember anything past this.

it must have been quite scary when you fell into the water what with the sharks and stuff in it. Nice one that you got lucid though even if it was short its still really good.

Thanks for reading, mark! Yeah the shark dream was pretty scary, especially when I could feel the raft deflating. And Oneironaut was such a cool bouncer in the other dream!
