How Long Did It Take You To Remember Your Dreams?

I've been working at it for nearly a week, and have only had the faintest flicker of a memory. Am I doing something wrong?

The school year is nearly over, with finals ending on Wednesday, and after that my sleeping with certainly increase both in length and quality. Will this have an effect?

"I will awake from my dreams and completely remember them." is faithfully chanted until I fall asleep, but I'm still not getting anything.

If anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it.
Which leads to the ultimate question:
What would happen if one were eating hot soup with a potential spoon while sitting on a non-existent fence?

For example take a 2 hr nap and set your alarm to wake you up. Then snooze it and go back to sleep, then snooze again... you can do it few times. When I do something similar (out of sheer lazyness) I get a lot of mini dreams....

that might help you start off...

Also, setting your alarm at random times during the night gives you a good chance of waking up in the middle of a dream.

Whee! After over a week of limited success or none at all, I finally remembered two of my dreams last night! (Coincidentally, summer vacation just began yesterday.)

First dream was long, complicated, realistic (except for one or two things), and scary as heck.

Second was short and realistic- except for the fact that my friend's dad was a Catholic priest in my dream, and I thought "Hey! He's not a priest!" There were other unrealistic things in this dream too, but I only noticed the one I mentioned above.

My dream journal here will be updated shortly with two full accounts.

My recall has been crap for a few months now but I have recently started to recall some dreams. I guess you should just keep at it.

my recall increased dramatically after just a few days of a DJ

I usually set my alarm for 6 hrs after I go to sleep, then when I wake about 3 hrs after that I can remember at least 2 dreams vividly
~I wake up a little more every time I dream.

well, i've never had a problem with recall...i have phases where my recall becomes vague in terms of images, and i can't put it together coherently, but it usually rights itself...
i've always remembered my dreams, since earliest childhood.

Same here..always have great recall..can remember in details my dreams from as young as 8 yrs old...keep working with a DJ and giving attention to your dreams will help as well..the more we use the journal and concentrate on our Dreams the easier it is to recall them..we are convincing the subconscious mind that this information is important to us and thus IT make the recall /access easier and easier...
      Is THis A DREAM???!!?

Same here -- and sometimes I remember them best right after I wake up, and sometimes I forget them right then, but start to slowly remember them after a while.

sometimes i might remember an image from a dream days later...and then the whole dream of that night suddenly makes sense!
      does anyone else do this?
sometimes, with my recall, it's as if my brain waits for a 'cue' and only then do i remember certain bits...

Yep, this happens to me sometimes. A couple years back, I got such recalls up to like 20 times a day. That sparked my initial interest in dreaming...

As for dream journal - it is essential. I used to have fantastic dream memory, but then I abandoned my dream journal and slept in somewhat stressful enviroment... As a result, I couldnt remember much for 9 months!

after starting to put things in the DJ again, my recall is coming back...

a dream journal is essential...i didn't realise how much till i started keeping one of my own.
although sometimes i'll write a dream in half asleep, read it later in the day, when i've forgotten the dream and wonder why i wrote it.

My memory is naturally not very reliable. When I do remember dreams, which would usually be weekends, I just remember small parts and settings from them. I've yet to remember a full dream vividly.

The only advise I can give is GET ENOUGH SLEEP. It is so important that you are rested when working on your recall. Plus its nice to have energy to endure a long day. A dream journal is also necessary.

And one question: I let my mind wander when I go to bed, Is this why I have trouble falling asleep? and will it worsen my chances og recalling dreams?

Loegaire, there is a method I use which has seemed to help my recall quite a bit. Set your alarm for 2 hours or so before you normally need to wake up. When the alarm goes off, get up out of bed and get something to drink or use the bathroom, etc. so that you are up for about 5 or 10 minutes or so. Then go back to bed. I have been doing this and my recall went from about 1 or 2 dreams a month, to at least 1 and usually 2 or 3 a night. The important thing is to try and write them down as soon as you wake up. Depending on how well you recall and how long it takes you to get back to sleep, you may need to adjust how early you set the alarm to wake you up before you go back to sleep. I set mine at about 2 hours and 10 minutes or so. I hope this helps you out, it has helped me.

Just thought of something. Place a dream journal on your face so when you wake up you can't miss it.

I have been remembering my dreams since 4 because my father ran many dream workshops and I ended up doing it naturally. I had only one really bad spot of dream recall at 8.

Just keep working at it and it will come.

      just a thought

As I read the comments on this forum, i realized that I've been doing some of them and they work for me too. For some reason, I always remember my dreams better early in the morning. So I, as well, always set my alarm for about 5:00am (or have been doing lately so I can start to have lucid dreams again). It'll go off and I'll usually have a dream to write about in my DJ. Then I'll set my alarm for 6:00am and then 7:00am. I'll wake up a few times during the night as well on my own (unfortunetly), and sometimes I'll have a faint dream that I can write about.

The other night I awoke in the middle of the night and I had a dream that I knew I had to write down, but I was so tired. After lying in bed for a while, I got up and wrote in my DJ. When I woke up the next morning, I went to look at my DJ, but there was nothing there. I had actually dreamt that I wrote in my DJ although I didn't actually. So, you have to be careful.

I found this site two days ago, it was at night anyway, I read about dream recal and decided to try it. I went to sleep right when I was done reading. I remembered about 2 or 3 dreams that night, they weren't very vivid, I think one of them was though.
      Yesterday I remembered one dream.
and now it's almost time for me to go sleep

When do you officially remember your dreams? 1 per night? Or maybe all of them?

What is a full dream. Its hard to tell where dreams start and end. The latter is usually waking up for me... Often times I get a feeling that I didn't get the beginning of my dream on paper

It is hard to remember the beginning of a normal dream. Usually it originates in some kind of hypnogogic imagery or just starts from some thought of yours.

I'd say you remember your dreams when you remember or at least aware of all of them. Remembering one dream per night is not enough

Lately I've been remembering one dream per night. The details are good and the dream itself is long and involved. My problem is that my alarm isn't waking me up when I want it to, so once it does, my recall will probably increase.
