    Thread: Regaurding Naps

      I've poking around in the search option a bit but couldnt really find too much information on naps. The topics that were related to naps, seemed to be surrounded by uncertainty.

      I wake up every morning at 4:15am to get to work at 5. This usually makes me get off work about 1:30pm and home by 2, which btw is the natural human naptime. If I slept a good rest the night before I will usually nap for 1 hour and experence no recall. But if Im short on sleep I can sleep up to 3-4 hours, and experience my best recall.

      I read in some topic in these forums that sleeping during the day causes better recall, but have also read from those who take short naps during the day, that they experience no RC at all.

      So the question thats is now in my head is hard to word. Basically I understand that REM periods during a full 8 hours sleep, will be near 1 hour at the end of the rest. But does the amount of REM increase based or the time you have been alseep, or rather how much you actually need the sleep.

      So say I take a nap when I get home and Im ...
      A) absolutely exausted. And sleep 4 hours.
      B) a little drowsy. And sleep 4 hours.

      I would like to asume the the longer REM periods would at the end of option B, and that I would likely have very little REM time during A.

      well, usually if you're really tired, as in option a, you are more likely to recall your dreams, because when you fall asleep, you are so tired as to be closer to a REM cycle anyhow. If i'm right, REM sleep is a deeper stage of sleep. So, the more desperate you are for sleep, the quicker you enter REM.

      I actually tested this when i came home from America at the beginning of the year, i suffered terrible jet lag, and i had some of the most vivid dreams of my life.

      In fact, arriving in america and adjusting to time zones also improved my recall, because i'd jumped over timezones, and essentially been awake for 24+ hours at both ends.

      Wow, your the only person who posted in three days. Glad you did though.

      Well my bro is standing right next to me so, and he just woke up from a 14 hour rest, and said he thinks he had a ton of dreams near the end too (but he cant remember too well, due to the marijuana which caused him to sleep the 14 hours in the first place).

      But, I think your right. It seems that only when I stay asleep for long periods do I get the most vivid dreams. Im probably going to start going to bed really early, so I actually get 8 hours rest long before its time to wake up, that way Ill have the opportunity to add an entry to my journal every night.
