Dream Signs can be anything that is common in your dreams. They affect Lucid Dreaming, by cueing you into the fact that your dreaming when you see them.

For example, a purple cat walking around, or a flying pink elephant could be obvious dream signs. Thinking logically and realizing that those arent "right" can induce a lucid dream.

A good way to find common relations between dreaming is Dream Journaling. Whenever you wake up, try and think about any dreams you may have just had (but dont strain yourself). Write down everything. Do this with all your dreams. This will help you with your Dream Recall/Ability to remember your dreams. Study the notes you take, and try and find a common ground or occurance between them. For example, if your always seeing a lion in your dreams, that can be a dream sign.

Even things you see in reality can be dream signs, such as your hands. People often use this to do Reality Checks. Make it a habit to look at your hands on a regular basis, and ask your self "Am I dreaming?" Your hands will become a dream sign, and if you develop this habit, and do it in a dream (even without realizing it), you'll clue yourself in that your dreaming.

Thats what dream signs are, and are for. They are things that you use to help you realize your dreaming and gain lucidity.
