It's not the habit of doing RCs that's important

I've been thinking about making RCs a habit. However, i think it isnt the actual habit to do the RC that is important. Let me explain. You could do RCs all the time, and forget to do them in a dream. What you need to make a habit is REMEMBERING to do an RC. I know it sounds the same, but just listen to my theory of how to get the habit down. Instead of doing an RC, say, every 20 minutes, you do an RC, then let yourself forget. Later on, let yourself suddenly remember to do a reality check and have an, " oh, I forgot to do a reality check, let me do one now" moment. If you have a lot of these, then the, "Oh, I forgot a reality check" moment will become a habit, and that is what you really want to have during a dream.

Also, when you do your reality checks, instead of jumping straight to the reality check, you should say aloud or to yourself, "I need to do a reality check, so that I can determine if I'm dreaming". That way, your subconscious knows what the habit you're trying to establish is. At least, I think. I havent actually tested this, I'm just putting it out there.

Relatively good idea. Prospective memory is very important for LDing.

How do you suggest one "forgets" the did a RC?
      Bollocks.

that's the problem. I guess just let your mind drift. It takes conscious effort to remember to RC every five minutes, so just do not apply that conscious effort.

It sounded like you meant forget that you did an RC.

I don't even think it's the subconscious habit that's important. If it becomes a habit, by the definition of a habit, you won't put any thought into it. Therefore, you're less likely to see when it actually is impossible, and therefore less likely to realize you're dreaming. For me, I RC before I go to bed, after I wake up (the past two nights in a row I've gotten lucid dreams from RC'ing after I wake up, because it was an FA) and whenever I think about dreams or reality checks. The important thing is establishing what works for you.

Oniman has a point, but I know what you mean. You should remember to do an RC by yourself, rather than have an alarm clock to alert you to do one. There may not be an alarm clock in your dream to remind you.
