Help On Deciding Which Book To Read

I have to read a book for a college english class I'm taking next year and it has to be from a predetermined list. I've narrowed down my choices to a couple books but would like some insight from other people who have read them.

1984: This book sounds pretty interesting and I like the whole totalitarian government and how it affects an individual's freedom, but I'm not that big a fan of books set in the future.

Siddhartha: While not very religious I do find myself more spiritual than others so I feel like I could relate to this book more than the previous one. I find Hinduism somewhat interesting but it's not a huge fascination.

The Chosen: This book is probably what stands out the most to me. I enjoy reading about an individual's religious quest especially when it's one that's not very well understood.

Note that these are all based on short summaries I was given so all the books may not be given the same amount of light but any insight from others would be greatly appreciated

1984 is very good philosophically, and it'll keep you guessing. It wasn't just all "oh no totalitarianism", it gets very much into the underlying philosophy, and you'll find yourself making some interesting observations about our society and how opression arises. I personally found it fascinating, I'd count it as one of my favorite books.

I've read Siddhartha as well, it takes an interesting look at the idea of seeking spirituality, in a personal sense. It was good, but I personally didn't enjoy it nearly as much as 1984.

The third book I'm not familiar with.

Thanks for the insight. I do like more philosophical themes whenever I'm reading a book/watching a show, or just life in general, so 1984 sounds like it would be a bit more interesting. Hopefully someone who has read The Chosen will chime in since that one piqued my interest the most.

IDK, I know other people in my class that read 1984 and weren't as interested by it, but perhaps they just didn't put as much thought into it. It was one of the few assigned books of my time in high school that I got really into.
