It isn't the theme but the execution. Like I said they take it to the absurd. Take the spider and the butterfly example you gave. Replace the butterfly with a baby and replace the spider with a human flesh eating monster that has machine guns for arms. Then the monster shoots fifty people and tries to eat the baby, do you still help the monster to live?

Things could be a little more subtle and the bad guy could be a little more sympathetic. Also the ending leads you to believe that the main hero doesn't even believe in that stuff, and only did it because he was blindly following what someone told him to do.
