      Spirited Away

Anyone seen this film by Miyazaki?
I watched it last night with my boyfriend, my first foray into anime. ('Arent' they just cartoons?')
I was totally hooked on it. It really reminded me of what it felt like to be in a lucid dream. And it had a lot of human factors behind it as well. I watched the japanese language version with English subtitles, which seemed to add to the atmosphere of it.

That was the first anime film that I watched (in English, though). It makes me smile thinking about it.

Oh! I love it! Really cute!

I found a place that shows it in Japanese (just type in Spirited Away, and go to page 2, and BINGO): www.youtube.com

I want to see Howl's moving castle! I watched the documentary on the making of the film too, and that was pretty fascinating. It's amazing when you realise how much work goes into making an anime film. Even more than a regular one i think...

I've only seen bits and peices of it, but it looked really good, I'll have to check out the whole thing when I can.

yeah, they're cartoons for grownups. Like harvey Pekar is comicbooks for grown ups. Lets us be kids without being frowned at!

I've learned to love anime. Princess Mononoke is one of my favorites. Haven't seen Spirited yet, but now consider it highly recommended!

Along a similar line, I was just loaned a "comic book" by Alan Moore and David Lloyd called V Is For Vendetta. This is one incredible story AND collection of artwork. It is no children's tale by any stretch... it is sophisticated, dark and filled with plot twists and false leads. So far, I'm absolutely loving it.

I enjoyed Spirited Away, but my favorites are Totoro and Princess Monoke. I grew up on Totoro, and I first saw Princess Monoke when I was nine or ten. Miyazaki is a genius!

      no, but i'm downloading it!

it seems like a very good movie though, i've seen loads of recommendations on various sites...

and somehow... i think theres a difference between cartoons and anime...

but i keep using the word "cartoon"for my parents, since they wont (want to) understand the word "anime"...

and heres a tip: ALWAYS watch animes (or movies from different countries) in their original language, since they tend to suck in their dubbing (if you need an example: "fruits basket"or "elfen lied": if you want to shame yourself for the hideous dubbing humans can make, i recommend these to you.) (except "Cowboy Bebop", the voices are very well done)

and because i heard of it once, and i wanted to share it with you guys:

Laputa was the first one I ever saw, years ago, so that will always be my favourite. Princess Mononokee and Spirited Away are quality. I didn't like Nausicaa that much. Howl's Moving Castle was ok. There was only one cinema in my county playing it and when I watched it there was hardly anyone watching it with us (mostly kids with parents lol). No one's mentioned Kiki's Delivery Service, I like that one too.
