As a lot of people say, music is my life. It's what i do, it's what i will always be doing. I personally think i have an extremely diverse taste in music. I try and give every band that sounds remotely interesting at least one listen, and i generally try not to write off any group/artist/etc. without giving them a 2nd or 3rd chance, sometimes more.
My roots are with metal, of all kinds (bar most of the mainstream stuff), but as a result of my acceptance and understanding of music in general, my tastes have expanded far and wide to include stuff from virtually all styles of music. Really the only kind of music i don't enjoy is modern mainstream music (radio and mtv type stuff, although some of that i do enjyo still), motown, vocal jazz, and some pop music from all eras. Punk and emo i really don't enjoy either. Almost any modern rock.
Rock - Mainly 70s prog rock. Especially Zeuhl, Canterbury, Krautrock, RIO/Avant-Prog. Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Magma, Rush, Caravan, Gong...
Metal - Mostly Death, Black, Doom/Stoner, Progressive & Avant-Metal. Emperor, Cynic, Opeth, Nile, Cryptopsy, Pain of Salvation.... i could be here all day.
Classical - I love 20th century classical music. Messiaen, Cage, Zorn, Ligeti are all great. I'll also mention Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky and Purcell. Mahler and Ravel also sound like my cup of tea, but haven't really explored them properly yet.
Electronica - Not a fan of that "doof doof" type music. So i don't really like dance, trance or anything like that. But i do like experimental electronic, and i do like some drum n bass, and trip hop influenced stuff. Electronica is particularly good when mixed with noise i think. Artists include: Bjork, Dalek, Prodigy, DJ Spooky, Diana Behlke sound good, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher.
Folk - Something i'm relatively new to i would say. I love Loreena McKennit if she counts, but i really like the nordic instrumental folk type stuff (stuff you might find here http://www.noside.com/artists.html). Particularly Gjallarhorn, Frifot, and Annbjørg Lien. But as i said, i haven't even begun to scratch the surface yet.
Jazz - Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Weather Report, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, it's all good! The only jazz i don't really like, as i said before, is most vocal jazz (ie Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra etc.)
Experimental/Avant-Garde - Quite hard for most to listen to. It's not music to be scrutinized and intellectualised, especially free improv, which is possibly the hardest music for people to swallow. But it speaks to a part of me no other music can, it reaches parts of me that order and sanity cannot. John Zorn is the big one here. Fantatic music! I'm yet to hear anything by him i don't like, and i've heard a lot. I guess noise would belong here too. Though i don't listen often, i don't mind putting on some Masonna or Merzbow, or, as i said before, noise+electornica. Borbetomagus are great though, mixing free improv and noise.
Other Some 80s pop is great, especially stuff like Cynid Lauper and Belinda Carlisle. I've also recently started to accept rap/hip hop as a genuine form of music. Not 50 cent or anything like that, i can't listen to that stuff, but there is some good rap out there. As i mentioned before, i like Dalek. Really interesting atmosphere behind really good lyrics. I've also just discovered Cirque Du Soleil's music, which is fantastic.
There's still so much out there though. World music is something i've barely glanced at, and is probably the most vast sea there is in the music world.
That's all i can think of for now.
