Yeah so I searched to make sure this hasn't been done before... it hasn't... at least not recently. So the title is pretty explanatory of what I'm asking... just post your favorite video game of all time (and why), or make a top 5 list if you wish.

      Top overall:

      1. Final Fantasy VIII
      2. Final Fantasy X
      3. Tales of Symphonia
      4. Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time
      5. Final Fantasy VII

As you can see I'm an RPG addict... however I like all games... I'm a gamer heh. I like Final Fantasy VIII best because of the storyline, the lead character Squall was in so many ways like me, introverted and afraid to get close to anyone. I related to that so much(It actually goes a lot deeper than this, but it's a very personal story I am not comfortable sharing at the moment, only my closest friends know it). It was also the first RPG I ever played and got me hooked on the genre.

      Top by genre:

      Role-Playing: Final Fantasy VIII

sub-category - Massively Multiplayer: Final Fantasy XI

      Action/shooter:
      3D FPS: Unreal Tournament 2004 (FLAK MONKEY!!!!!!!&#33

2D Sidescroller: The contra series... gotta love it

      Adventure:
Legend of Zelda series... Ocarina of time is probably my favorite

Sports/racing: Burnout series... Burnout 3: Takedown was probably my favorite.. or Revenge... I also loved F-Zero on the SNES

      Puzzle: Tetris

      Fighting: Soul Calibur II

      Platformers:
      3D: Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

      2D: Sonic the Hedgehog 3

      Top games by playtime:

Final Fantasy XI - 4800+ hours (MMORPG... time sink... life stealer... etc)
Final Fantasy VIII - 8 or more playthroughs.... somewhere in the 600-800 hour range
Final Fantasy X - 3 or so playthroughs, 220ish hours total
Tales of Symphonia - 2 playthroughs, 170 hours or so
      Star Ocean 3 - 1 playthrough, 120+ hours

One might wonder how I amassed such playtimes... Well from the ages of 19-21 I didn't really DO anything... but play games... literally 16-18 hours a day I was a total addict. I eventually decided I wanted an actual life... now I only play on average 1 or so hours a day, I'm in college so there is no time to be an addict heh.

      Top played systems:
      1. Sony Playstation 2
      2. Sony Playstation
      3. err... lots of things tie for here

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

Myth 2, Myth 3, Myth 1. Myth 2 is the best game I have ever played, the single player was great and the multiplayer was the best of any game I have ever seen. I played the multiplayer for over a year(maybe 2?) straight. Myth 3 had the best storyline for any game I have ever played and also the best single player, however its multiplayer was a bit weak so overall its not as good as myth 2. Myth one was good at everything and is very close behind the others but, you can't have two games being your favorite of all time heh.

Actually the name I am using right now, Alric is a guy from Myth.

I love the Hitman series, Call of Duty 1 and 2, Pro Evolution Soccer 6, Rome:Total War, Age of Mythology, Battle for Middle Earth 2, Football Manager 2006, Jedi Knight:Jedi Academy.
      Lord of the Rings quotes:

"Behold, I am not Gandalf the Grey, whom you betrayed. I am Gandalf the White, who has returned from death. You have no colour now, and I cast you from the order and from the Council." - Gandalf to Saruman, The Two Towers

"Men of Gondor and Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of Men fails... when we forsake our friends, and break all bonds of fellowship... but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when all hope comes crashing down, but it is NOT this day! This day, we fight! For all that you hold dear, stand, Men of the West! - Aragorn

"Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of man will he fall." - Glorfindel

"in Rivendell there live still some of his chief foes: the Elven-wise, lords of the Eldar from beyond the furthest seas. They do not fear the Ringwraiths, for those who have dwelt in the Blessed Realm live at once in both worlds, and against both the Seen and the Unseen they have great power." - Gandalf

I don't play many video games anymore, really. I quit playing anything except Halo 2 about two months ago because lucid dreaming has pretty much replaced them all. The only reason I still play Halo 2 is because I make a lot of money off of it . Um yeah but when I did play video games a LOT, I'd have to say my favorite games were Diablo II, Warcraft 3, Oblivion, Counter Strike Source, Halo 1 and 2, and Starcraft. Those games were like... the essence of ownage.

      Top by genre:

Role-Playing: Final Fantasy (What, you want a number? Are you high? My head would go 'plooie' if I put a number down)

sub-category - Massively Multiplayer: Since I put down Final Fantasy, that would include Final Fantasy XI, but other than that: SWG (Readies for flames)

      Action/shooter:
3D FPS: Unreal Tournament Something(I don't actually remember the name, and Call of Duty is pretty cool)

      2D Sidescroller: MEGAMAN!

      Adventure:
Legend of Zelda series... Majora's Mask is probably my favorite

Sports/racing: Burns is right. MARIO KART 64 owns all. Non can recreate the pleasure that has brought me. (playing as DK, with Starman, and hip-checking miniature Toad off into the Lava is a PRICELESS moment, he screams soooooooooooo well. I play for the beatings of Toad)

Puzzle: Got me there. Hexic maybe?

Fighting: Super Smash Bros. Melee because I'm a Nintendo freak
      (can't wait for Brawl)

Platformers: 3D: Hmmm... Mario 64 maybe. Why not? (not my favorite genres)

      Top games by playtime:

MARIO KART 64! (An UNGODLY amount of time. Me and my siblings have had marathons for days (tag teaming for sleep). I think we beat most if not all the world records.
      SWG sucked my life away.
So did AC:WW. I was on all the time because I held the Curiosity Shop, so I served thousands of customers online. I'm glad I quit. I haven't been able to touch the game for months on end.
Zelda stuffs. The original took a while (we're perfectionists, so we did EVERYTHING)

      Top played systems:
      1. NES
      2. Uh...
      3. Nothing

Thanks for the outline Leixor! I only had to edit a few parts.

I always laugh at people when they flame each other over videogames(or really any matter of opinion). Why should it matter? It doesn't matter to me if anyone else in the world likes a game I like... it's my opinion. Mine, its not universal. People who are like "OMG You like *insert game here* that sucked! You are an idiot" boggle my mind... I mean i'll defend my reasons for not liking a game... but that doesn't mean anyone else has to feel that way... It amuses me when people do this haha. Actually you don't see a lot of flaming around here... 'tis a good thing... indicative of a certain level of maturity. As for SWG... nope never played it.

The people I REALLY hate are the people like the guys on X-Play.
None of those people make games. Being a fledgling game maker, I still drop my jaw at today's games because I can't possibly comprehend the talent and effort that gets put into a game. A year's worth of work gets tossed into a trash heap, cursed at, then forgotten. That makes me come so close to weeping, but that had nothing to do with the topic.

So to be on topic: The Atari games? Hells yeah. I'm an old school gamer myself.

I play super smash bros melee almost every day pretty much. My friends and I take it to a whole new level. I love the intuitive controls, fun game concept, and the sheer looniness of some of the matches.

Mega Man is definitely my favorite side scroller. It's. Just. The best.

The Metal Gear Solid series is also fantastic. I liked the second one better but I wish snake were the main character. Third one was far too short and there weren't enough confusing plot twists, but it's still an outstanding game by any standard.

as for RPG's, FF7 was my favorite oldie, and oblivion is the best new one I've played.

DDR was a sick game. I used to be into it but then I realized that it's much more fun to excersize outdoors. nice while it lasted though. I still hit the arcade sometimes to showcase mah skillz.

Arcade games? asteroids is the best I think. Check out spheres of chaos for a new take on asteroids, theres a free demo online. you won't be dissappointed!

OMG I remember when I was like 4-6 years old playing Combat with my older brother on the 2600... such fond memories(I loved the tanks where the bullets bounced... I kicked so much ass&#33. I remember(well, I don't remember it myself, but am told of it heh) one time around that same age (If I was 4-6... that means my brother was 24-26) my brother was over at the house for some reason. Well everyone had went to bed but he was playing the original Super Mario Brothers on NES. At like 2 in the morning he woke us up 'cause he was about to beat it.

And oh yeah I definitely agree... A video game is a culmination of one or many peoples visions. It should not be so easily dismissed. There have been a few games that were just thrown out there to cash in... but that's life... There are certainly games I've played that made me go "What were they thinking?"... but again that's ME. My opinion is no more important than that of my fellow mans... heh
