Sounds like fun! Although... I wouldn't worry about splitting the credit just yet; you'll be lucky if you make it to the publishing stage, because,
1.) 95% of all mangaka (manga artists/writers) are Japanese (I'm assuming neither you nor your friend are), and it would take something amazing to break that stereotype, and
2.) Most mangaka start out writing for monthly magazines - each chapter comes out first in a magazine published monthly, and then gets compiled into a tankoban (manga book).
However, you might get lucky. If nothing else, maybe TokyoPop (generally considered to be the scum of the manga publishing industry) will pick you up. They've already published several non-Japanese manga writers, including some manga-ization of Nickelodeon cartoons.
As for your question about sharing credit, I'd assume it would be like every other industry - you split the credit equally unless both artists agree differently. I'm not a lawyer, though, and I'm also not very familiar with the inner workings of the manga industry, so I could be totally off-base, there.
