Pretty much sense pokimon (first time i saw Anime), i have thought Anime was ridiculousily stupid, and the only people that watched it were immature kids with no friends. Lol. Or freaks who get turned on by anime porn and weird stuff.

If i turn on the TV in the middle of the night or something and Anime is on, i might watch it for about 30 seconds..and im thinking "the the hell is this crap? How could anyone like this, its freaking retarded"

Im not going to start watching it or anything, but iv realized that some people on this forum that i really respect, that are awsome, and very interesting people watch it.

Anyway, if you like it, or know anything about it i would just like to know why?

What about it interests you? What makes it special?

I would like to at least gain some knowledge on it before i judge it.

(I was watching TV today and it came on, and my normall thoughts arose..then i thought, i know nothing about this) thats what sparked this thread.

Well Azumanga Daioh is the best.

It's the most beautiful, psychedelic, hilarious, brilliant thing that human kind has ever created.

Grab a film by Miyazaki - Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away.

You will understand.

Thats because Anime's like pokemon are stupid. Pokemon, Digimon, Dragon Ball, InuYasha, are all aimed at young audiences. Elfen Lied, Cowboy BeBop, Death Note, Basilisk, Black Lagoon, Eureka Seven, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trinity Blood, Vandread, Noir; all are great animes. More mature, and aimed at older audiences. Elfen Lied is by far the most gory anime to date as far as I've seen. Cowboy BeBop and Death Note are my favourites.

Death Note is a currently ongoing series, on its 28th episode. Watch Death Note from Episodes 1-28 on
http://deathnote.tv/. I guarantee that you'll not only enjoy it, but be impressed.

Yeah, if YTV and Pokemon is your idea of what the good anime is, then you're really missing out hehe. I haven't watched any new stuff in a long time, but I've always enjoyed Lodoss .

Your original post is the most contradictory thing I've seen in a while.
You utterly impale anime and those that watch it with insults from "immature kids" to "freaks" and then you "want to understand it before you judge it"? If someone likes something for whatever reason and you are not aware of that reason, allowing thoughts such as the above is utterly close-minded, not to mention just plain horridly rude if you openly state them. It makes you look like an uncontrollable and childish character that throws out harsh words with hardly any consideration of others. There is a reason for everything and everyone deserves respect for what they value unless it's something that brings harm to others.

On topic: anime is a specific type of animation. From manga to anime shows and movies - the whole genre is quite unique just like any number of other things one could watch/read today. I myself like it for the artistic style, which appeals to me and I practice illustrating anime myself instead of drawing realistic drawings or any number of other styles. Then it also comes down to the specific anime I watch and enjoy for their specific storylines and all such.

Well the thing to remeber is that anime is just like anything else on TV. 80% of stuff on tv is junk, so you probably got 80% of anime is junk as well. Also as they said, anime is just a style so you have little kid anime and you have adult anime. Just like you have anime that are comedies as well as anime that are action.

The thing to remeber is they probably put out a 100's of shows a year and theres probably over 10,000 anime shows total. So judging all of them based on a half dozen shows isn't that smart. Luckly a lot of the total junk gets filtered out and never make it to the US. The problem is that a lot of them tend to be kid shows as people think of anime as cartoons, which have a stereotype as just for kids.

Also stuff like pokemon or dbz go on for 100+ episode and have very little story to them. A large section of animes only go on for 12-24 episodes then end. They have a story and they tell it then it ends. Personally I like the ones with a connected story better than one with stand alone episodes. People here in the US like the safe bet though, thats why they will release a the 8th season(just guessing but I know its high) of pokemon and not a short 12 episode anime, which is probably far better. Its also why 90% of our movies in the last few years are books made into movies, old movies remade, or sequels of old movies.

You are just like my mother... You see a cartoon with monsters in red-white balls which people call an "anime"... It is bad, and therefore, ALL things that are called "Anime" must be bad...

It's the same as saying that ALL live action movies are bad just because you've seen a bad live action movie...

But, just for the record: I admit it: Pokemon is friggin' bad... Good for children perhaps, maybe some fun for them to look at, at times... But it's still bad... It is a bad example of an anime, trust me...

There are, however, much more good anime series than bad... And the quality of most series are very good Imagine the worst live action movie you've ever seen in your life... now the very best... see the huge gap in quality? It's the same with anime... Pokemon is the worst in this one... Now think about what the very best one will be like...

(You probably won't listen to this, but here it is, nonetheless: ) Just try one... Try an anime serie (I recommend Death Note as a beginner), and see whether this really is immature or childish or whatever (Or go see "gunslinger girls" for some very-good-quality anime (the title is misleading... It is a drama, not action... in 13 episodes, there are 2 episodes in which actual "gunfights" takes place)).

(Check this thread There are lots and lots of great recommendations there (lots of which are made by me... ^^)

And who knows... maybe I am a freak...

But if that's so, then I'm proud of it!

So:
Your to do list for the next couple of days:
-watch anime
-watch anime
-watch anime

What anime you ask?
start with Death Note
Continue with Azumanga Daioh
Look at the list... or PM me... I'll be glad to advise some to you

And Remember: If one anime isn't your style... then look for another... There are so many times I've started an anime but I didn't finish them just because I didn't found them to be my style or genre... or because I didn't feel like watching that particular genre or style. Again: It's the same as live action movie... If you don't like hospital series, and somebody advises one... I am sure you still won't like it very much, simply because it isn't your genre...

And please, don't watch an anime with the idea "this is going to suck" in your head. Have an open mind, have no prejudice, and enjoy...

But anyway: Go see one and report back to us whether you've been cured ^^... I look forward in your next message ^^...

Yeah, I think it's good to watch a solid, modern anime (such as Death Note) before breaching into anything older (such as Berserk, for example) or obscure regardless of the content quality. And I wouldn't watch any 'mind fuck' anime just yet if you're a bit apprehensive on the whole subject.

But back to your assumptions: that's as if someone outside of America had glanced at ten minutes of one of the worst movies of western cinema, or had seen clips of pornography, and judged all of cinema based on those experiences.

Princess Monoke by Akira Toriyama (the one who made Dragon Ball by the way) is an awesome anime. I loved it. Sen to Shihiro is great aswell. Also by Akira Toriyama. Those are both movies.

I love watching Dragon Ball. It's probably one of the best animes I've ever watched.

Why do I like anime? I don't know! Why do you like to watch american-style cartoons?

I'm not going to rehash everything that's already been said since, as far as I can vouch, it's all true.

There are many faces to anime, just like there are many faces to Western Cinema. If you find yourself looking at anime as "all the same thing," you're not looking far enough. And, unfortunately, if you're just looking at anime through the Western mainstream....you're probably not going to have many options, leaving you with stuff like Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. The best you can find, out here, on TV, is stuff like Cowboy Bebop (if you haven't At Least seen Bebop...you need to do your homework), Samurai Champloo and things of that nature. I love DBZ, but even that is an acquired taste, and lost my following during the season before DBGT started.

But anyway, yeah, you've got a lot of research to do before you can make a judgement on anime as a whole. Get to it.

So was Sen To Chihiro (Spirited Away). But Miyazaki directed them. Wasn't Toriyama a principle artist (the principle artist) in both?

**EDIT**

Apparently not. I see no credit to him in the movies or references anywhere else that connect him with the movies of Miyazaki.

I'm quite sure it's made by Akira Toriyama. Not entirely, though they mentioned in a TV program I once watched, that Akira Toriyama was helping in the making of both films. Maybe they had their facts wrong?

I wonder why none of the anime that is actually good ever makes it to American TV. Even the ones that are evetually dubbed are usually only for sell on DVD.

That's cool and all, but cyclodragon???

I wonder... Is my nickname really that complicated? (<----- it's a joke... it's not serious, don't respond ^^)

Oh! And don't check out "alot of it"... just look around the recommendations and try the ones that sound good to you (wikipedia is your friend just look over there for a plot summary and see whether it'd be a good one for you or not (don't look further than the SPOILER sections though, it ruins your watching (imagine watching 24 episodes each 20 minutes long, but you already know how it ends... It kind of sucks, really))).

But, really... DON'T start with the mindfuck anime series... or other extremes... they COULD turn you off again.
I'd still say that you should start with Death Note (wiki-link)
Read the plot, and if it seems interresting to you, go watch it (there are tons and tons of fan-subbers who have this serie downloadable... just ask (if you don't know of BitTorrent), and I'll point you in the right direction...

Lol, i know you said not to reply but i am

Sorry about the name, i tend to look at words and not read them. (This is why i am such a bad speller lol)

Forinstance, if a word says salmander (thoughs little lizard things under rocks) i might read salmon. (The fish lol)

Hmmm, thats a horrible example becuase i wouldnt mess thoughs two up but you get the point.
I normally dont mess up real words like that unless they are very similar, but nicknames and such.

Ill make sure to check out "death note" first.
