There’s a similar topic here, with some good recommendations for someone who is new to anime. I know a few people listed their favorites in there.

I’d like to think I’m rather selective about what I fangirl over, so take these as you will. Also know that I only watch anime in Japanese, unless someone twists my arms, ties me to a chair, and forces me to watch the dubs. Well not really, but I do like the original Japanese better.

I stand firmly by Fullmetal Alchemist (but I still say the manga is by far better). Both the anime and the manga go down in history as the most intense opening-scene to a series, ever.

Also, you can’t go wrong with anything by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away; Mononoke Hime; Howl’s Moving Castle; Nausicaa; Grave of the Fireflies; Porco Rosso; etc.). I’ve been a big fan of his since I was a little girl.

Also, I know it’s not ‘anime’ in the traditional sense, but since that blessed day I downloaded it, I’ve probably become the biggest Advent Children fan on the planet. Lucius and I have watched it so many times that we can pretty much quote everything said in the last 20 minutes of the movie (if you’ve seen it, you know exactly what I’m talking about). Advent Children, in my opinion, made the word ‘fangirl’ a verb. I swear, I still utter delighted little squeaks whenever I watch it.

And it just occurred to me that I think I’m always the first to respond to anime-related threads.

My favorite would have to be Oruchuban Ebichu. I reccommend it to everyone.

And because I don't stay up late enough to watch when the regular anime comes on Cartoon Network, I'm satisfied with Naruto on Saturday nights at 10:00.

I'd love to see more of Miyazai's work, though. I loved Spirited Away! Luckily they're showing four of his movies this month.

      ...I watch too many cartoons.

No, Cartoon Network. I don't know which days, though. I need more tapes, tho.

      Spirited Away
      Full Metal Alchemist
      Elfen Lied
      Tenjou Tenge
      (In that order)

I haven't finished Inuyasha, but I was beginning to enjoy it. Same with witch hunter robin, but it takes a while to get exciting.
Hellsing didn't quite live up to expectation, but I enjoyed it anyway.
My wife tends to prefer Cowboy Bebop. Not bad, but not my usual style.

I've had Howl's Moving Castle for six months now but I still haven't gotten around to watch it. I want to but meh.

I'd suggest Last Exile. A friend gave it to me to watch and I swear after the first few episodes it gets a firm grip on you and you never want to stop until you watched the entire thing. The good thing is that it's only 26 episodes long so you won't be distracted for too long. The story is pretty powerful and deep and the setting is very unique, so I wouldn't suggest it if you aren't into very serious plots in anime. The graphics are amazing though.

      Series (in no specific order):
      Elfin Lied
      Fullmetal Alchemist
      FlCl

Those three really draw me in more than any of the other anime's I've watched. I used to be a big Gundam Wing fan, but ever since it went off the air, I stopped watching.

When it comes to movies, I absolutely LOVE Miyazaki's work; Princess Mononoke, Spirited away, and Nausicaa particularly. I've only seen 2 or 3 other anime movies that I can remember.
Well life is short, so love the one ya' got, 'cause you might get run over or you might get shot.

I seriously grew up on Pokemon like it was my oxygen. Then I was into Final Fantasy, but moreso the games than anything else (except Advent Children, which was more like a really good and long ff7FMV) But now my new obsession is Initial D.

I've been seriously into Gensoumaden Saiyuki lately, though I have yet to see the anime. I've been reading the manga for GS: Reload and it's awesome so far. I just finished reading the gaiden (the one about Goku's past) and it is great so far, but ended on a serious cliffhanger. And I can't find the rest of it! =/

If anyone happens to know a good torrent site to download the rest of it, please let me know. I keep finding it in Spanish. *sigh*

i've never been such a fan of anime and cartoons & stuff but:

i used to watch Pokemon ALOT...

      then Dragonball Z

      but then......

i downloaded "Love Hina" (after hearing alot of recommendations on various sites & stuff)
and i was in love (hehe)
i downloaded EVERYTHING of it after that, the specials, "love hina: again", the soundtrack, and at last, the manga...

      its just... perfect

right now, i'm busy downloading "Fullmetal Alchemist"

and i expect alot from it...

      my, i'm such a criminal

it's their own fault... why don't they show us the better anime series here in holland?

Because Dutch people need to come out of the closet and embrace their inner nerd. It astounds me that there aren't any manga/anime stores anywhere around here. There aren't any comic shoppes, period. That is greatly distressing.

Oh, but this is funny... Lucius and I were in a gaming store in Nijmegen and we saw a random Winry Rockbell figure sitting on the shelves. We couldn't figure out where she came from because so far as we know, FMA hasn't hit the Netherlands yet. I think she's still there, too. I'll find out when we visit Nijmegen again this week.

Fullmetal alchemist is awesome - I'd be suprised if you are disappointed.
I'm tempted to watch it again...

Since I was up at 2:30 last night... or this morning I manage to catch an episode of Trigun.... and I want to watch more.

In all honesty I don't know what constitutes a good anime. I merely like what I find entertaining... or has some good "artistry."

I liked what little I saw of Trigun. If I have a chance (or if someone can direct me to a torrent because I'm too lazy right now to look it up myself), I'd like to see the whole thing at some point.

And I've yet to meet anyone who has hated, or even disliked, Fullmetal Alchemist. But I repeat: read the manga too! It's mind-blowing.
