Tell Me... What Music Makes You Cry?

It's always interesting to see what kind of music really affects people, what makes them really cry, and why it does that.

So, Tell me what music makes you cry. It can be a specific song or artist, or music about a certian subject or with a certian tune.

I'll more often than not cry when I hear songs by Ayreon. All of their albums are so loaded with emotion and meaning that I'll usually break down and cry, sometimes even in public. Once someone asked me if I was okay when I was kind of crying because of the music, and I just looked at him and said "It's so pretty... He became the new Migrator." Oddly, their also my favorite band of all time.

A beautiful aria (opera) or a heartfelt gospel song can really move me to tears.

A song which makes me nostalgic, could be of any type, as long as it brings back memories.

Also sad love songs, if i can relate to them.

Well I wouldn't go so far as to say that I've cried to any music, but the most "heartfelt" tunes I have heard are the bagpipe stuff they play at Rememberance Day ceremonies (that's the day dedicated to all our fallen soldiers), but it's more from the solemn atmosphere than anything else...

I must say that it is mostly the atmosphere that does the trick. When I went to Ypres once on a school trip, they played the Last Post at the Menin Gate to commemorate the fallen unknown british soldiers during the first world war. The atmosphere, the total silence, and the three lonesome trumpeteers are just moving. It is such a short theme, but when you look around, you see that it is able to utterly silence everyone.

And of course, I've been to our school play yesterday, called "Antigone", Sophocles' magnificent tragedy, which was being played as a 'farewell' to a quite prominent teacher here (he's retired now), as well as the 120th birthday of the school. And it was great, beautifully done.
Now at the end of the play, with Kreon , king of Thebes, almost dragged away, totally beaten, as he himself was the indirect cause of the death of both his wife, as well as his son, and the chorus-leader singing the last lines, telling you the most famous of greek morales: that Hubris (exaggerated pride and confidence) has been the doom of many men, and always will be, they slowly unlit the lights, creating some kind of 'fade out', all while the Canon in D minor for a string quartet written by Pachelbel is played.
I could just control myself NOT to cry...

Also, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, and the seemingly innocent "Dango Daikazoku" can move me to the brink of tears (albeit for the memories and connections I, myself, have with them).

Yes... I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff... Even a parody of a sad scene with sad music can make me cry, for goodness' sakes...

Patriot, or suck up? You decide!

      Just kidding Mes!

Don't Cry (lol, Irony) and November Raid by Guns N' Roses are pretty amazing. I can't say I've ever been brought to tears by music, but if you get a chance to listen to those songs, especially November Rain, you'll get what I mean. Amazing music, really moving.

Music doesn't really make me cry, but some that were moving to me are Grown Men Don't Cry, Live Like You Were Dying, and If You're Reading This, all by Tim McGraw. (Especially the third one, it's so sad... )

Ahhh!! Hehehe Nah it's mostly the atmosphere when it comes to the US one (I'm talking like sitting outside surrounded by a bunch of people watching fireworks). With the Russia one, it's mostly nostalgia.

All kinds of music moves me to tears.

Amazing Grace at a funeral, or any time played on the bagpipes.

      Bach's St. Matthew's Passion

      Handel's Messiah

Nanci Griffeth's "Love At the Five and Dime"

      John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery"

      any children's choir

Taps, particularly on and around Memorial Day

      As Clairity said - a well-rendered Aria

Songs and music that were shared with people who are now gone.

In the theater though. Didn't have much to do with the actual movie. I dunno why. Certain pieces like that.

I cry when listening to music ONLY when I have a conflict with my BF. And I can relate to the song. Otherwise, no.

      Two songs I've cried to:
      Make It Work by Ne-Yo
That's What It Does by Ne-Yo.

I've never cried to a song, but i've struggled to hold back tears a few times. I'm a man; i can admit it!

It's all about the moment, though. I remember the best the time i was watching TV, a show about some guy who had to get court marshalled for his dead soldier friend's actions or something, and he stuck up to the court marshal guys. At the very end of the show, you see him at the Vietnam Memorial Wall, and a simple trumpet theme starts playing as he puts his hand over the name of his dead comerades. He puts his head down, and in the reflection of the wall you can see three soldiers put their hand against his one after another and bow their heads. That moment was incredibly powerful. It was moreso the moment than the music

I've found another song that makes me cry: "Rose K." by Rasputina. It's about a old woman forgetting everything about her life, not even remembering her son.

Just remembered another one for me. "After the Gold Rush" by Neil Young.

Makes me cry every time. Especially if I sing along.

The closest I have ever gotten to crying over a song (actually, it was a music video) was the video for Aaliyah's song "I Miss You," when all fer fellow artists/friends got together and lip-synced to her song, as a tribute to her when she died. She was one of my favorite artists, at the time, and I think I've been more moved by her death than any other artist.

Also, Christina Aguilera's song "Hurt", that she wrote to her dad.
Gives me chills every time I hear it.

[Edit: Damn, I'm watching that Aaliyah video again, for the first time in a long time, right now. ]

      [Edit x2: again.]

Yeah. I know, right? I just watched the Aaliyah video (again), and I've been wiping my eyes the whole time. What a beautiful tribute after such a horrible tragedy. x3
