      The Golden Compass

      This movie is AWESOME!!!!!!!!

"HOW DID YOU GO SEE IT?!?!?!" you ask? My dad won advance screening tickets. It was really Cool, with a capital C. And since there wasn't a topic about it already, I thought I'd put it up for everyone. Of course, being the person that I am, I won't spoil anything for anybody.

Who's going to see it when it does get released???

I thought the previews looked pretty good. And Daniel Craig is lovely as usual.. And I like those fantasy type films. That's cool you got advanced tickets!

The other topic is in R&S - it isn't really so much about the movie as the controversies surrounding it.

I'm looking forward to this... I'll be going with my 17 year old son.

Let's see - spoiler coming below, so I'll try using the spoiler tags.

The movie got very mixed reviews according to Rottentomatoes and Metacritic. Still, seeing the trailers prompted me to buy the book (I usually avoid fantasy, mostly because of the lack of genuine fantasy and imagination in fantasy movies and novels) and I have to admit that I have found Pullmans storytelling captivating.

      Book = VERY good

Film = hopefully will compare nicely, though I doubt it. Too much Hollywood commercialisation will probably dumb-down anti-religious themes

I heard the movie was based on religion and how the plot is actrually supposed to be about "killing God".

I'm a pretty religious person, but I'm still going to go see it.

Plus, alot of movies were based on religion. Look at the Chronicles of Narnia for an example.

What is the movie about over all, anyways? I watched some previews but I still don't get it too well.

The following synopsis is extremely brief and misses out loads; I've also tried to not include conclusive spoilers either.

Essentially, it starts with a little girl in a parralel universe, where everyones soul is manifested in another being which runs around with them and can shapeshift. She discovers something called "dust" which is a magical substance which is in and around everything "think star wars the force".

[there are loads of smaller story arcs, but the overall one is that she manages to leave her universe]

Then we are introduced to a kid named Will, who is our second main character [we dont see him til the second book/film]. He is from present day england in our universe. so the england we know. he discovers a knife which can cut through the fabric of space time and hence use it to travel inter-dimension.

Together they go on some wild adventures, involving all the beings across the dimensions coming together in rebellion against the angels who govern them, and the "authority" [taken by most to be god].

Essentially the latter stages of the overall plot concern the war on heaven, where the authority is, and the establishing of heaven as a republic, rather than a dictatorship.

But, as far as "the golden compass" goes; you only have to worry about the first part of that synopsis.

The golden compass ends before we meet will or hear about the authority.

Third book is where they go off on killing God really. First book not so much on the religion, more a build-up.

Mostly it should be fantasy, I guess, but next two films (if they get the rights to them, which last I heard they hadn't) should be solidly controversial.

I'm going to see it tomorrow, I thinks.

No one has ever told me that Narnia was based off religion. And this controversy with TGC is BULL. I'm Christian, but I went to see in. (it was AWESOME by the way, if I didn't state it before) The author can be Atheist all he wants. The fact of the matter is; he has an EXCELLENT concept. The movie rules and I bet the book is even better.

Eurgh, just got back from seeing the film. Bitterly disappointed. It felt like it just jumped through the plot, I didn't feel any overall epicness (as with Narnia and other similar films), the battle scene was way too contrived, the characters felt flat and didn't develop, didn't feel any emotional connection with anything that happened. Visually unispiring, music might as well not have been there.

I'm now an aethiest cynic with no love for anything no more.
