So, if you're a Brit, you can't have failed to be caught up in the Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes buzz over the last few years. The first show, 'Life on Mars' caught viewers by surprise and captivated the audience in it's mystery. About a year later the speculation as to what the bloody hell was going on was finally put to rest until 'Ashes to Ashes' popped up.
For the uninitiated, the basic set up of the two shows in 'Cop nearly dies, wakes up in what may or may not be the past and, while trying to get home, live the life of a DI in their respective eras (Life on Mars 1973, Ashes to Ashes 1981). The shows follow the general format of a 70's/80's cop drama respectively, but with a chilling psychological mystery twist.
I'm not going to ruin the ending to 'Life on Mars' here, since the American remake in the vein of 'Starsky and Hutch' (only with scary psychological horror and implied time travel) is to be shown over there in the autumn.
Anyhow, anyone been watching the sequel 'Ashes to Ashes'? After a dodgy first two episodes, the show has finally reached the dizzy heights of its predecessor. It's different, but the change is a good thing, it's stopped the old format before it got dull.
The season finale of 'Ashes to Ashes' airs this Thursday and it's gotten me just as confused as speculative as the Life on Mars finale. While we think we know what's going on now, do we? (I might ramble on about this in spoiler tags a bit later).
Will Alex save her parents?
Why is has her father been appearing to her as the clown from the Bowie Ashes to Ashes video (although she hasn't picked up on them being one in the same yet)?
Why could Shaz see the clown if it's only Alex's hallucination?
Why was Evan at the scene of her parents death?
Who was the man who shot Alex on the phone to?
Is Alex dead?
What's up with the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe references littered throughout the last few episodes?
So yes, any speculations? Pretty much everyone and their grandmother has their own ideas as to what's going on. I want to hear yours.
(And to anyone who's missed out regardless of nation, I implore you to find a way to watch the two shows. They're one of the best things to happen to television in recent memory and essential viewing... just in cast the mess up the US remake )
