And I only heard about it an hour ago. Take Invader's advice into account - apply sense.

It's just that this isn't really an "America kicks ass FUCK YEAH!" kind of thing.

Yes, the personified head symbol of the war on terror has been eliminated. OK. But the whole endeavor was executed horribly over the last decade, costs many lives, practically destroyed a country and for what? Nothing - nothing will change, the war on terror remains a farce and many more people's lives will be destroyed in the years to come. We have created an infinite mess and everyone posting in this thread is privileged not to actually having to live in one of the war torn countries. And who gains from the war? To quote the paper that was posted earlier: The state, the military industrial complex, the bureaucracies and AIPAC.

I understand the euphoria. But before declaring this day the national "osama is dead" holiday, I think the situation calls for more reflection, more rational thought, more acknowledgment of the situation, general mindfulness. What does this mean? What will it change? What are you celebrating, really? What are the lessons learned and was it worth it? Where to go from here and how do we want this to end?

I wouldn't say that Obama had no chance of being reelected before this, I'm pretty sure he had the best chance. Bin Laden's death will definitely help his cause though.

I hope we get to hear more about what Bin Laden has been up to for the last 10 years. How did he escape Tora Bora? Did he have other close calls? Did he travel a lot? How long has he been at that compound in Pakistan?
