President's Council Wants a Few More Things from the National Nanotechnology Initiative Dexter Johnson / Tue, May 01, 2012 Just four months after the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) responded to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology’s (PCAST) 2010 report on the status of nanotechnology, PCAST has offered up a new assessment. While the PCAST report on the NNI in 2010 wanted to see greater efforts towards commercialization and some attempt to address environmental, health and safety (EHS) concerns, this time they just wanted to see how well the NNI had done in meeting their previous recommendations. In the Whitehouse.gov blog covering the announcement it seems PCAST are satisfied: “PCAST found that the Federal agencies in the NNI have made substantial progress in addressing many of the 2010 recommendations that were aimed at maintaining U.S. leadership in nanotechnology… The PCAST assessment particularly commends the expanded efforts of the NNCO in the area of commercialization and coordination with industry, and the NNCO’s release of a focused research strategy for addressing environmental, health, and safety (EHS) implications of nanotechnology.” Okay, pat on the back, job well done…uh, wait, there are still some new recommendations that PCAST would like to see addressed. You can find them in the PDF of the full report on page vii. They fall into the areas of strategic planning, program management, metrics for assessing nanotechnology’s commercial and societal impacts, and…wait for it…increased support for EHS research. Additional support for EHS research might be a required element for every PCAST report in the future. More interesting to me, however, is this continued emphasis on improved “metrics for assessing nanotechnology’s commercial and societal impacts.” It seems to me that this is an area in which everyone from governments to corporations wants a formula that will churn out a sense of what kind of impact nanotechnology is really having. While nobody is satisfied with the metrics that we have, I would suggest that there are few number-counting options that will really be able to sort out the full impact of nanotechnology. But again, it should be interesting to see what they come up with. link I wonder what what new metrics will come of this examination, seeing as publications per year per country has fallen flat on its face and definitely seems to miss the essence of progress...

silicon chip tops up on 10-12 ghz.now IBM in 2003 gave announcement of nano carbon chip of current estimate 81 ghz.They got the technology far by no as in 1989 japanese make the first cellphone with a camera.and the 81ghz estimate was in 2003 today is far more developed.So the thing is like that.United states is in ressesion from 1974 as the small tigers of asia and lating america are changing alliances.So first you're going to see in a point market is going to stop developing like now the are making computers with 8 core hypotheticaly 16 ghz with ventilators bigger in size by the chips itself.but in practice silicone is going to reach 12ghz not a bit more.And when the market is going to euxhast all the millions of products which are getting selled today usa is going to bring up the carbon chip giving a blow-up in the market and forcing everybody to throw the old computers.same with 4x86 to 6x86 generation only now the world is filled by computers. Mark my word and don't dare to put money in a computer now.
