Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Can somebody explain this to me?
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

I think Nobel Peace prizes are pretty superficial and pointless really. I mean, Al Gore, seriously..?

Obama does seem to be working towards peace but as with all Nobel Peace Prizes it's really too early to tell. It's true that quite a few previously hostile countries have taken his message of a clean slate to heart though... Mugabe has suddenly started being very open, I think possibly because the whole 'white western suppressors' thing really won't stick any more. And the Iranians are protesting in the streets about their crazy leaders. The Russians are talking about their nukes too, which is good.

I admire Obama's aims, but giving him the Nobel Prize before he actually gets any real results is just plain stupid, and makes a mockery of the entire thing.

I'm glad they have at least some rationale, in terms of his efforts toward the Muslim world and with nukes, but yeah, I don't see what it accomplishes, compared to others who could use the exposure and the money to aid their cause.

*sighs, shakes head* that was all I was going to put...but I decided I would put my two cents in that this is more of an effort to give america a bit of a face lift than anything else.

The association that gives the NPP stated that it was not given to him for results which haven't happened yet. It was given to him for the work he's been doing in pursuit of peace. In essence, it's not about his having actually brought about such monumental change, but that he's devoted so much of his efforts toward it.

Whether or not that undermines what the NPP has previously stood for, I don't know. I've never really been too savvy on the Prize, or its past recipients. That's just what I gather from their statement, for which I don't have a source to post. I just heard it on the news and radio this morning.

      ...

You don't really have to do really accomplish much to get a nobel peace prize anymore. Granted, becoming president is a big accomplishment. I'm glad we have jumped that racial barrier. But-

He hasn't done anything yet! He's made it so that Guantanamo will eventually be closed in all likliehood. He's tried to be diplomatic. He's tried to push for universal health care...

I guess Al Gore just compiled and misinterpreted a bunch of data, (not being a scientist with the credentials to interpret it properly,) and won one for that, too.

      Flip, this is senseless.

Obama again assembled the members of his war Cabinet to weigh Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal's call for 40,000 more troops.

Summing up the president's day, the libertarian Cato Institute issued a news release with a pointed title: "For Obama, peace in the morning, war in the afternoon."

lol, as he is planning to send more troops he is awarded with a peace medal.....ironic

War is peace I guess now, wasn't he an anti-war candidate?

Gotta love broken promises, maybe they should award a peace prize to kim jong il or Dick cheney next

Reading more about it, I can see a little better where they were coming from, giving Obama the peace prize. Just by winning the election, having campaigned on diplomacy, conflict avoidance, and conflict resolution, Obama (or really, the people who elected him) caused people around the world to question their perception of the USA as an enemy and others to question their cynicism toward our ideals of equality, "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." People touched by our current conflicts or living under our sanctions were reassured of our good faith to bring those situations to a close.

It's hard for us to see from the inside with all the political noise flying around, but Obama's election alone probably did advance world peace more than any other event of the past year, if not the past couple decades.

What you're saying is, you don't know what you're saying. You're comfortable with that?

I know what I say, and I know what puns mean.

DO I know where they come from?

      Usually, no.

      Problem? No.

      Do most people do it?

      Yes.

I'm sure you also use old puns. Do you know where they ALL come from? No. DO you know what they mean? Yes.

Good grief! I can't belive that this is even an issue!

You do know that the nobel prize committee is made up of the most respected scientists in the world right? The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to be exact. They have the credentials and merits to critique something like that, if they found a fault with it they wouldn't have given him the nobel prize. Remember that the Academy of Science recognizes only science, not politics or hear-say, which is why their official position is that global warming is real and man-made. Al Gore is not a scientist, he didn't make any of the claims in his keynote. He won the nobel prize for bringing it to world-wide attention, the science was done by scientists.

As for Obama, seems a little premature, but Peace prizes are more about anticipation. Dr. King won his in 1964 for his commitment to peace, and was a full eight years before the equal rights amendment. I would assume Obama got it for his commitment to only use the military as a last resort and diplomacy for everything else. Even though Guantanimo is still running, he immediately made it conform to the Geneva Convention guidelines about prisoners.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.
I'm not surprised that you didn't know about any of those things, the news that you watch don't report on things like that. Oh oh oh, do you happen to Tivo Bill O'Reilly? I'd love to see his face as he has to announce that Obama has won the nobel prize for peace.

No, he brought it to the attention of the pig-ignorant US.

Everybody else was well aware of the GW theory, it was already firmly in the media. Any critical person can see that Al Gore's documentary was superficial bollocks and GW is also largely bollocks.

After Al Gore was awarded it, I lost all respect for it.

Obama has never been a peace candidate. The only peace candidates I saw were Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul.

Closing Guantanomo Bay is just for looks. We have secret prisons all over the world in which to torture people that have never been tried for a crime.

That's not really true. Mostly the Nobel Piece-prize is given either to someone who've done a lot of good work already, or someone who needs hand.

What a fuckin joke. He's accomplished nothing, especially in the way of peace. Apparently being a black President, having a high IQ and a mastery of rhetoric earns you a Nobel Peace Prize these days.
