      cartoon blasphemy...who's at fault?

How is burning an embassy because of a single cartoonist righteous? Seems like a cartoon is a pretty poor excuse to resort to mob-violence.

lol. Bacon and beer Pig and alcohol. Yeah never thought of it that way. However I doubt that most muslims know about that.

Some dude on TV had a theory that some muslims in countries like egypt act as extreme as they do becouse other -tottaly crazy- fanitic muslim countries like dissed them and said they were wussies that weren't true muslims jihaddies.

Ok maybe they said it a bit differently, but the idea is the same

I read today that an Iranian newspaper is running a competition to see who can come up with the best (most offensive) cartoon of jews. I think it was Gandhi who said that if you took an eye for an eye the whole world would be blind it's happening right in front of us!

The deadly and destructive riots by fundamentalist Muslims are not a function of Islam. It’s a result of religious fanaticism – beliefs taken to the extreme, beyond reason and any possible sense of humor, irony, or perspective. Which particular religion it is is irrelevant. Christianity does the same thing (think bombings of abortion clinics). Islam itself is a generally peaceful religion; however, the official formulation of a religion can and always will be taken to the extreme by those seeking comfort, solace, and security of their own self-righteousness within the volatile turnings of an inconstant world. It also doesn’t help things that the Muslim world has felt preyed upon, ridiculed, mocked, and used by Western Europe and especially the United States in their support of Israel and now the US-led war/occupation of Iraq.

Take angry, religious fanatics with a victim complex (note: not the majority of Muslims, although I’d imagine that the majority are probably fairly pissed off, not only by the inconsiderate nature of the cartoons but by the absurd over-reaction of their fundamentalist countrymen) and add a cartoon by a satirical newspaper in the region of the world perceived by those fundamentalists as “the heretical, unclean oppressors” and it’s like striking a match and tossing it onto a gasoline-soaked brush pile. The Danish and French papers had every right to publish those cartoons – it is a perfectly legitimate and legal exercise of free speech – however, actions have consequences, especially when dealing with reactionaries in a flammable mixture of religion and politics.

The situation is not nearly as simple as this thread is making it out to be, and I must admit to being appalled by the lack of maturity presented here.

Newspapers are justified in printing "anti-islamic" cartoon--fanatics overreact--an islamic newspaper prints an "anti-semitic" cartoon--jews in europe are upset...And so the cycle of stupidity continues. Too bad that the extremists lash out against Denmark, which I believe is one of the more progressive countries in Europe...

I read an article about how some Palestinians tried to kidnap a Dane, but the guy turned out to be German, so they let him go...Everything seems to be driven by complete irrational immaturity.

I agree that it is foolish to group the extremists in with the general term "muslims", but I would be surprised if the people here meant all muslims, and not just the fanatic portion that actually involved themselves in this nonsense...

Furthermore, in a situation like this where there is a pretty large (in my opinion) regression of the quality of relations between the middle-east and europe, islam and judaism (the two religions that should be closer than probably any others), it is fruitless to take everything so seriously. That is what led to all of this madness in the first place. Everyone should just gather together around the hash pipe and maybe some of these problems would be solved.

Yeah I agree with you Peregrinus, fanatics will always be extreme, no matter what the religion. You have to question the reason for some papers to publish these cartoons, however. Yes, all papers should have the right to publish them, but they are not particularly good cartoons in any case and simply publishing them because everyone else is, and claiming it to be a right of 'free speech' is a little stupid. It seems that many papers have only published them to cash in on the media attention, knowing fair well that many muslims find them offensive, and that it might also flame more violence from fanatics.

If the paper feels that its readers will be substantially 'enlightened' by publishing the cartoons then by all meanns they should go for it, but free speech doesn't compel anyone to publish such inflammatory cartoons.

it is a matter of faith: look at what the christians did: they did crusades... and guess what?
      the crusaders were the fanatics...

it is the same with those muslims: the real fanatics are pissed...
the crusade of the muslims has come...
they're only a few centuries too late

A world full of buddist or atheists would be more fun ^__^

Or get them so baked that anyone with a bag of potato chips or box of pizza is immediately granted ally-for-life status with all past grievances forgiven.

Those cartoons were released many moths ago, last year it seems. The riots and all the aggravation only began now. It's been theorized that it's all stimulated internally by the governments of those countries and I'm beginning to believe that more and more considering the complete senselesness of such a sudden onset of rage after such a long time.

Yeah I just heard that too. it's old shit. Some people just used this cartoon to make muslims angry. Some one really put effort in making those people pissed.
