"The Golden Compass"-It's okay to have an opinion, but not your own.

Since hearing about the controversy with the “The Golden Compass” movie, I decided to head over to Amazon and look up some reviews on the books. I noticed most of the copies have a 4 or 5-star review, but some with at least 100 one-star reviews. I should have expected it, but I was surprised when I opened the review section and at least 99% of the one-star reviews were “its atheist!” “Mr. Pullman wants to teach children to hate God!” “He is no C.S. Lewis!”

While I fully support the freedom of speech, I think it’s ridiculous people are so obsessed with their own religion they’ll take time to write pages and pages of negative reviews on a book they haven’t even read or know the actual meaning (Harry Potter, anyone?). One reviewer states Mr. Pullman supports such “pseudo -beliefs as Buddhism, Animism, and nihilism” I mean, what the hell?

I’m not too familiar with the series personally, but all of these reviews have made me consider reading them; but what I do gather from real reviews, Pullman is speaking out about organized religion and how fucked up it is. Is anyone here familiar with the series? Many were making this a Pullman Vs. C.S. Lewis thing, since obviously it’s “okay” to write Christian-themes in a children’s book, but not any agnostic or atheist ones.

I think it’s perfectly okay to give a book a bad review, even if it was due to a religious conflict, but when you haven’t even read a page from the book (some reviewers even admitted to it) and give it a one-star over something you heard on the news, it’s pretty lame.

Thoughts?

Equally I highly highly doubt the reviewers posting the low scores had taken the time to read the book; either because they're illiterate or too lazy and stupid.

That's a pretty amazing skill, being able to write but not being able to write.

Edit: Alright, a slight fabrication...truth be told, probably 3rd or 4th, but meh you get the point.

Of course I was exaggerating; but the feeling and point of my accusations were carried appropriately.

The subject is "Golden Compass". In no way am I pointing out your thread is pointless. I'm just pointing out all the G.C. threads that have run rampant. Which reminds me...I should watch that movie.

Let's see, two of them are about the movie coming out, and one is about the Christian/atheist thing. So you should lay off if you have nothing positive to add.
