Well, there are definitely two sides to every coin.

Although, in the first comic's case, the storyline hasn't ever had any references like that, subtle or otherwise. Also, they just introduced that octopus character who previously made them all sushi and had his forehead covered.
The second comic's storyline always has these random little stories each week, and so it is completely different each week. I hadn't read it in some time, and just happened to be flipping through it when I saw the sun. Even still, it involves them using this sun to go to another world (refer back to the 'MEI' kanji post which implies also 'dark' 'another').
Lastly, this student had stopped taking lessons and hadn't been to class in over 6 months and just randomly showed up to say hello without previously mentioning the phillipines, to give me a black sun...??
Either side of the coin you decide to see, you have to admit it's pretty weird to have that many overt experiences with the same fringe subject in under a week...
