      Internet restriction

      http://stopvirgin.movielol.org/

Virgin has been trying to calm the internet revolt against them for saying they would limit users' internet access for commercial ends, stating "We're not suggesting there will be any denial of access to those who don't want to pay." and then going on to confirm their previous anti-net neutrality statement: "VM could offer content providers deals to upgrade their provisioning if they want to ensure best access to to broadband subscribers.". They did not comment on their earlier statements about putting non-premium content providers on their slower "bus lanes".

Why shouldn't they be allowed to do that? Any customer who doesn't like it can just leave and chose a better provider. It's not like they're the emperors of the internet and soon there will be no alternatives.

Yes it does mean that there will be no alternative...because then all Internet providers will start to do it because they can make a profit. That is like saying why not raise the price of gas to 5 dollars a gallon. They can do it, but is that really what you want?

Its not as simple as just "leave." People don't feel like going through the hassle for what is happening now. Since people don't leave, then others will start to do it.

Watch the clip and you should understand.

You can't make a profit if people don't like it. And free access is actually a major selling point to those that are interested in it. I think your assumption that all internet providers will start doing it is therefore unfounded.

The fascists of Tiscali couldn't get a foot down here in Germany. They started out with some success but with the growing importance of broadband decided to block Torrent ports and eventually ended up with some 2% market share in broadband that were bought by another company (ironically, "freenet").

The reason you can't raise gas prices to some arbitrary number is the same as is the case with any other product - competition.

I tried to watch the video but I got pissed because they had all the guys talking after they showed the hot girl. That's no way to present a cause.

Free access? What are you talking about? I didn't see anything about that.

I read that access will be the normal price (as it is now I suppose) and have restrictions on them, and another which will have less restrictions on them.

I meant free as in unrestricted/unlimited in terms of contacting every server worldwide at the highest possible speed rates and access times, sorry.

I don't know much about this kind of issue, but I don't think it will ever come to be that every company restricts certain portions of the internet; think about it, it would then be a huge commercial plus for any company which provides 'unlimited internet access'. So it'd never work out because there isn't the financial motive for a 100% monopoly.

If this happened on a large scale then I'd imagine people would just Pirate the internet.

Most big ISPs already do traffic shaping for torrents and the likes. Then then turn around and deny it.

Yep. You guys are lucky that in America there are many options. Where I live, I've got 2 to choose from, one worse than the other -.-

See! Btw...I believe that the Internet restriction I was speaking of is actually happening somewhere in the UK or something...I'm not certain.

Ok, just for the sake of it. Where I livewe got:

Speedy - expensive, contract ensures only 10% of the promised speed, adds ridiculous quotas of download that, if you exceed, you must pay per byte.

Virtua - less expensive, restricted to some areas, contract ensures only 10% of the promised speed, but practices actions such as packet injection and limits anything that isn't the http port - bye-bye games, downloads, torrents, or anything else for the matter. You basically pay 40USD to read your email at high speeds -.-

We must destroy the internet companies. Blood will be spilled.

But did you guys know Google is starting up a satellite which provides free high speed internet and wireless communications?

Yea but internet, and wireless communication companies, are obviously taking this to court. Google can do this because they practically advertise the whole internet. But Google argues internet, and wireless communication should be free, like radio.

      I'll post a article soon.

Google can rule over the Internet imo. That because they do the right things. Microsoft can fuck off. Did you see what they did to Yahoo? Fuck microsoft. Pitty there's no operating system remotely as good as windows.

      people often misunderstand "net neutrality"
and I think the video is a complete crock of crap, to be honest

a totally neutral network is not always ideal
(in fact, it's often far from ideal)
but like with anything, it can be used, or abused

      think of it this way,
your torrent client is not "net neutral"
it does not treat every peer equally
some peers are choked, so will ignore them
some peers are on slow connections, so will serve them slower
it will prioritise uploads to favour those who you've downloaded from
Again, your torrent client is not "net neutral"

In principle, I don't actually have a problem with ISP's offering tiered services
as long as it's not abused

someone (I think it was Tim Berners-Lee, but not sure) once said
"A neutral network is a stupid network"
meaning the network will just blindly do what it's told
and not put any intelligence into packet routing
