This is a thread I want to make that can be peaceful. Where I can go without being ridiculed. Without anyone wanting 'evidence' from me. Without any need to engage in terms of skepticism. Where I can just be myself without having others asking me questions about why I believe things. An invitation for those who just like to hang out and be. To post stuff without engaging negatively in other peoples personal beliefs in terms of chipping away at them. Within the guidelines purposeful discussion can take place. There is no need for anyone to post in this thread if they are not interested in co-operating with the guidelines I make for it. There is countless other threads. For those that can't help themself, they are engaging in nothing more than Harassment and attacking free thought and it's right to exist.

If you cannot accept people and what they say without harassment in terms of telling them they are illogical or that what they said is not valid. Then you are off topic. With people such as myself out of context to this mentality. Any sort of negative confrontation or lack of co-operation is off topic illegal and alien to the thread.

Some may not like or agree with these guidelines. In which case you are simply not permitted and should go elsewhere.

Sadly I agree with Korittke. There is no point in a discussion without asking questions about someone beliefs or having them define terms for your understanding. I don't argue to prove I'm smart, I do it to increase my perspective on the world and really work out for myself what it is I think about things. There are plenty of people on DV that have it all figured out and are just meandering around putting people down for not being as smart as them, but just because a few do that does not mean that a discussion without question of one's personal beliefs serves any purpose whatsoever.

Wow. My dream recall is abandoning me, i want more lucidity, and I'm going to a Hedley concert on Tuesday, July 8, at the Victoria Curling Club. I mention it every day, and I am very excited. It's my first concert. I love tennis, and I hate everyone who says it's a lame-ass sport for wimps. Well, screw them, I'll play whatever damn sport I want to, and I love it. Awesome. Sounds like you have an interesting life. More interesting than mine. Good luck with your exams. Let me know how the concert goes. I haven't been to one for ages. Just no good live bands around my area or I can't find them. I've always had a soft spot for tennis and golf I don't think they are wimpy sports. By the way I am especially interested in hearing about your experiences in your philosophy club. :)

My dream recall seems to remain around average if I'm not paying attention. If I am it doubles in quality. I don't know how far I can push it my energy and most of my attention is always used up with other things.

A good 18 years ago, I was watching a program about ghosts. and I guess the term orbs wasn't around yet. instead the program used the term 'white lights' and claimed, that these 'white lights' were a common experience in ghost phenomenon. I was just a kid then but I remembered it because it was true to my experience that I had, BEFORE watching the program

the first time I saw a ghost, it was floating down in my hallway. I quickly turn around in disbelief and trying to pretend I didnt just see what I did (I was flipping out). when I turned around, I was facing the living room. and all along the living wall were these white round lights. and they were just zipping and zooming along the wall. when I was little I described them as flash lights. like there were 20 flash lights on, and zipping from side to side.

it wasn't frightening. it was more like a wtf moment. I remember standing there forever watching these round lights along the wall. my sister was with me. and I kept waiting for her to SEE them and be shocked like me. but she went on with business as usual and it was clear she didn't see the white lights.

I found out later that although my experience was visual, my sister had an auditory experience - she heard something coming from where I saw the ghost

I don't know what could explain the white lights. I did not see 'orbs' floating around. They were like flat flash lights, only along the wall. But there was nothing behind me or outside the window that could have caused it. We lived in a dead end at the edge of a tiny forest. there was no car traffic outside for one.

I heard about the white light experience again in the early 90s when the UFO and alien phenomenon boomed again. I remember in story one lady saw the white lights like I saw them. flat in appearance and zipping all along the walls. except in her experience she thought it was being created by some alien craft outside her bedroom. she did see an alien in her experience, but her alien was also ghost like - walking through walls.

thing was, she was awoken from her sleep - which is questionable because of sleep paralysis. my experience on the other hand, happened when I opened the freezer to grab ice for my soda!

I don't know if the white lights experience is something supernatural, or some sort of stimuli response.

Besides the flat white lights zipping along the walls - people have also seen three dimensional orbs. Some people thought of their 3d orbs floating and bobbing about as spirits. Others thought of them as miniature UFOs, or even tiny alien scouting devices. More recently, some think these 3d orbs as a natural phenomenon, like the northern lights or a desert mirage. Of course there is also the matter of altered states of consciousness.

Who's to say what orbs are? Who can say all the orbs being experienced are even the same type of phenomenon? I'm not convinced they are.

Which leads me to the next bit of the article. In the article it states orbs have being around before photography existed. They are usually but not always invisible unless photographed. Some skeptics conclude it is an entirely digital phenomenon. The idea of a world wide breakout of the same digital processing malfunction across every make of camera, causing the same effects over a variety of conditions, would seem to be a lot less plausible than the more realistic view that orbs are a real phenomena worth investigating.

In 1566 a woodcut of mysterious spheres over base in Switzerland show the flying luminosity taken in the zoological gardens.

A lot of the photographs I have seen, and particularly the ones in this article. They appear behind and in front of objects and unmistakable consistent round outlines of luminosity, varies sizes resembling a pattern of spirit photography. The consistent nature of the phenomenon makes it definitely something existent rather than unexplainable camera malfunctions.

When I was little I use to see little tiny lights zipping around my room constantly before bed. When I called my parents in to see them excited they said they can not see anything and to go to bed. Yet There they were flying around them. I called them Faires.

In the article it states animals react to them. They have being observed making crop circles.

Although video footage of orbs tends to blow the dust explanation into nonexistence, especially as scientist have recently clocked orbs moving over 200mph Across a room. Dust certainly doesn't move that fast in our house.

Unfortunately, yes, it does look like dust to me. Or possibly a dirty camera lense. But you never know.

The youtube videos of the orbs traveling across the city sky and across the crop circles aren't dirty camera lenses because it's video footage in real time. I've never known a photograph to come out like that because of dirt. Why is the rest of the photograph perfectly clear except the round orbs in it. What are you looking for some impossible magical colorful radiant 3d thing? That's pretty obvious to me that it's not a regular anomaly. 3 quarters of the scientific community agree and the other quarter are hardened skeptics. It goes to show how much attention people pay when they see these photos for the first time on here and comment casually, knowing little about the subject and not having seen them before or even aware of this. But I can understand the attitude. Orbs just don't fit into the old scientific model that is rapidly in deterioration. Most agree geometrical waveforms as the basic foundation for matter is more sensible these days.

I actually did have a camera lense get damp once, and the moisture forms around tiny dust particles on the lense, seeming like blurry orbs when magnified to take a picture. That's all I meant.

I`m starting to think that doesn't apply to this situation anymore, though. Again, theres no way of really knowing what they are (for a long time, at least).

These orbs are obviously something way beyond are knowledge, who knows? Maybe they make up the universe. Maybe they are bits of another dimension floating around us. I'd really like to know more. Ghosts...hmm, maybe. Aliens, I definitely don't think so.

I`m going to go google it now. This has caught my attention for sure.

Maybe they're a technical artifact peculiar to digital photography :P

Oddly, however, my friend's mom works down the street and the basement there flooded a couple months ago. When they were taking pictures of the damage, she got one with orbs just like in those photos (actually, I'm not sure if she took the pic or the insurance guy).

EDIT: wikipedia says it's flash+dust, and yes it's prominent in modern cameras, though not because they're digital so much as the compact designs changing the angle of reflection on near particles when the flash goes off.

The compact design that does not tell us much about all the cameras in existence and the common strange malfunction you are describing that would have to happen in all conditions where the orbs happened. So changing angles of reflection from the compact design. Are you sure? You say near particles where the flash is, and that's suppose to create the orbs. But the orbs don't appear in any pattern of conditions from any particular angles of any circumstance. Otherwise it would turn out as a malfunction consistently instead of no seemingly logical sequence that can be demonstrated as any faults of the camera. So the changing angle reflection from the partials in the light of the flash (some didn't use a flash) from compact designs seems to act entirely randomly and still don't come out as dust partials but transparent luminescent clearly defined objects. Behind and in front of things. Ofcourse all this is ignoring the video footage. Where people witness seeing it while filming it. Which makes the entire photography fault theory obsolete.


It would be interesting to see your contaminated picture. Together with the other orb pictures. Then we can judge for ourself if it resembles it or not.

But remember this is not just about photography.

Tao is providing a possible explanation, looking at the situation from a logical point of view. It adresses the statement that the artifacts have been increasingly common in newer cameras.
How is the theory unaccounted for?

Some of the outdoor 'orb' pics are clearly rain or snow--I've taken them myself and they're cool, but not terribly mysterious.

Such as hundreds of massive geometrical above scholarship level crop circle designs. That the orbs are filmed creating. But no, it is dust and snow droplets on modern camera lenses. Which increases the errors from improved design, coupled with a faulty flash compact design that malfunctions neatly changing reflective angles of near by particles into the shape of the orb designs. But only in pictures where the orbs appear is the camera faulty.

pretty similar isn't it. The orb picture seems more defined and integrated and less cut and paste though. When you look closely. It's vastly different. One seems very harsh with not much detail and close to the lense. The other is entirely integrated into the picture with proper contrast that indicates the presence from the spaces proportions in the photo. If that fake picture is the best attempts of reproducing the mistake. Then it does not succeed in duplicating the effect to the full quality of the original orb picture.

The two photos look much the same except for the maximum brightness of the faked ones, which could be because they're at night.

They don't look too different, and considering that they are from different places, it doesn't surprise me that since the physical reasons would have to be different they look slightly different. Similarities include, little holes in the circles, and while there are more in the known fake, there are condensed ones and large ones, and ones that are more and are less transparent.

The talcum powder one looked even closer, despite the fact that it was from a different source. (I don't know why the picture wont show up so here is the link http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/ma...9/113ce340.jpg it is lighter though.

As for the movies, the one from the "undisclosed" farm area, I saw a show years ago that made a circle like it, with video producing the same thing, I thought it was mythbusters but apparently not.

I only picked it because you put it there. I'll not try and use it anymore if you like. But if you'll notice the structure of many of the photos in the gallery, they are structured similiar to most of the pictures in the photos you've presented. In the photos where he made them purposefully faked he probably didn't feel like wasting too much of the time making them "proportioned" accurately in the photo. But if the structure is the same (and by this I mean not only the shape, but what is inside the shape) there is no reason to think that the photos presented as "real" are anything more than particles that are in the correct places vs. faked ones where they put the particles there themselves, or go to a place where they know they will find particles.

For example, the talcum powder photo was the best looking one, why should I assume that there aren't substances outside that can create the same appearance?

Actually, this was something put to rest a long time ago. I saw a video when I was like 10 or 11 that had the same results. It was these two men who had like lights on them, and then used a board and pieces of string with them to use their feet to bend the crops. It looks so fast because the camera that was filming it filmed at intervals of a specific set of seconds.

yeah I know I put the one of the snow there because I randomly searched for orbs and they were suppose to be the genuine ones. The photos there are not very useful for us novice interpreters. To think that statement holds any value of intellectual proportion here in this subject would make you equal to almost monkey like thought forms. Something recently on my mind for a new subject. Remember that lesson in school where you were told that the first thing in dimensions was a dot and that didn't exist? Dimension 1 two dots with a line drawn together but still not enclosing space so it was said to still not exist. Then dimension two 4 dots drawn into a square. Still not existing because not enclosing space. But then miraculously a cube in the 3rd dimension. That one exists because it encloses space.

How do you get an existing dimension from dots that don't exists to lines from dots that don't exist to squares that don't exist. I think there is a problem here.

All of the physics is based on this assumption about the dimensions. If this much isn't clear there is a good chance a lot of the other stuff is in error because of this foundational problem.

Demensions are just a concept. Length, width, and height make up space. Space itself is also a concept, something derived from the way we percieve reality. So demensions by themselves don't exist, but they are concepts to explain another concept known as space. I'm not even entirely convinced space itself exists the way we believe it to.

Concepts can work without being completely correct. What we do is explain things in a way that works for us. Just because it works doesn't mean it is exact. From what we see, we explain things. For example women have morning sickness during pregnancy because they feel sick and food repulses them. Certain foods cause deformations and miscarriages. It stands to reason that morning sickness lowers the chance for that. Women are doing it based on the idea that some food tastes bad it makes me sick. All the body knows is that the food makes her sick during pregnancy. It knows nothing of the damage the food can cause. However, the foundation of the visible purpose for the morning sickness to persist is because it decreases miscarriage. An underlying foundation was true for an overlying foundation that was derived from it, which was also true, like dimensions, but not true in the same way.

I guess what I'm saying is that dimensions by themselves don't technically exist, but what they represent is technically correct.

While that is true if you find something more effective you're not going to cling to the least effective foundation you're going to use the more solid sophisticated understanding as your foundation. You're certainly not going to stop looking for something more improved just because you have something that slightly works. Remember in the other thread how you said you are too lazy. The reason the point, line and plane(square) don't exist is because they don't have finite dimensions. A point is infinitely small, a line infinitely thin and a plane is also infinitely thin. By connecting the points (or lines or squares) in three dimensions, you have given them finite dimensions and hence they are an accurate description of something that exists.

What you don't understand is that we already know what it is I'm speaking of that is beyond dimensions, it is called reaction. Energy applied which equals a result.

I have a problem with the non existent dimensions creating an existent 3rd dimension. I think I can find a better foundation. Instead of saying the dot is non existent. It would make more sense to say everything came from the dot.

Grod feeling peaceful in communicating with people is better than isolating yourself each time you get hostile and over react. If someone can't make an effort to discipline themself in this area going outside won't change their weaknesses. Soon as they come back to reply and felt hostility they would have to leave again soon as they read it and nothing would be solved they wouldn't improve themself at all. Here's a red flag for the day.

I was just watching the news and a story came on about people beaten up and abused in the street.

So this politician says "this kind of thuggery has no place in our society".

I realized this statement was just as bad as the thuggery because it was a nonsensical lie. If thuggery had no place why was it existing? It must have a place if it's happening otherwise you're ignoring reality. Then I realized why he would say that. If you convince people that something isn't an effect of something you escape the consequence of dealing with it properly. In essence saying it does not exist in our society when it does.

This is absurd thinking that has become a cliché we are suppose to recognize as good thinking producing something civil. The solution is overlooked in this statement by saying it has no place when it's going on around us. The statement allows thuggery to continue unharmed and ignored and is anything but good thinking. This is not a solution or civil but trying to make something go away with your imagination which is entirely uncivil and not practical to dealing with the very real existence of thuggery in society. What is even worse is that a journalist like me would have more sense than a politician. Which is something else that shouldn't have a place but it does because it happens.

What the politician didn't say is that which should be recognized as common sense and the responsible thing. Thuggery is happening because our society is causing it. We must find the cause producing thuggery so we may eliminate it's existence since we don't want it to have any place in our society. This makes a lot more sense but would lead to a solution. Which is probably why he didn't say it that way. Instead he wanted to say it's already solved but it's a shame it happened anyway.

Or is there something else going on besides a lack of logic? Are politicians making use of hypnotic suggestions to the collective subconscious mind? It is known in oratory that you don't say something to the masses that makes them uncomfortable but that which they do accept becomes implanted and followed subconsciously. If the masses were to accept that thuggery had no place and hence didn't exist there would be no reason to seek a solution to a nonexistent problem. When a problem is not recognized as existing in the collective mind of the masses we can then ignore thuggery. This reveals to us not only the true nature of the politician but why nothing is getting solved.

What follows his quote could be anything from more bashing of thuggery to a proposal to increase the efficiency of the police force. What I was discussing is a principle not a sentence. The statement is a direct quotation of the politician by the media which is all they broad casted of him and I had thoughts on it. But still. I can't imagine someone saying that sentence comfortably. It sounds somewhat automaton, y'know? The more common second phrase has a similar connotation. The theory you came up with seemed like a stretch, valid, but almost unrelated to the quote. I somewhat agree with your argument, though. There is no difference between either sentence if the result is the same. The media covers more of the self-defense portion of crime than the prohibition of the source. Why would they do this? First, I'd say it's because we have an instinct to protect ourselves before attacking the predator. So we'd want to hear what we can do to save ourselves. But that's just the end of the stick. Why not, then, tell us what the government is doing to solve these problems? Because they can't. This is both good, and bad.

I'd say, there are too many factors for us to pinpoint a cause to these problems. We know the generalities involved with crime. They come from low-income families, abusive families, etc. But how do we prevent low income, short of communism? How do we discover which families are abusive (how do we know how many cases go unreported?)? The government cannot intervene with one's personal life. We could find out all murder plans, and drug trades, if we tapped all phone lines and chat rooms. But that invades privacy. In the end, the government leaves it up to the individual to choose whether he/she will be criminal.

In a way, it is a trade-off. Privacy/Free will, or the existence of crime? There is no balance that will appeal to everyone.

I would like to PEACEFULLY discuss the "meaning of life". I know this is a topic that leads inevitably to the religious shunning to "non-believers" and the atheists snobbing the religious, but I would like, for once, to have an active peaceful discussion about it.

My opinion: There IS no meaning. I personally feel that there is no meaning to life, and that in itself is a beautiful thing. People constantly complain about how objectives and obstacles are laid about them (working, parenthood, being a good person), and I find it interesting that people often have insecurities about how life "lacks meaning" or "direction", when it seems such a hassle to be associated with direction in the first place. Lack of meaning, in a way, is freedom. Freedom to choose the path of life that YOU want to take, to make your OWN type of meaning. But that's just me, i'm interested to see if anyone else has ever felt this way.

The main answer I am expecting to this is a type of "Life is about living out the word of God" answer, and thats koo' if thats your thing. Its just that i've studied most of the major religions (Christianity in particular, having had a catholic education up until now), and I find that many of the religious people I encountered only acted "good" because they were TOLD to act good by their sacred text of choice and their church-like structure of choice, and were offered the chance of eternal life for being good, and eternal damnation if they weren't.
Believing in having an eternal moderator who JUDGES your every action is a good thing in a way that it helps society maintain its flow (IMO, of course), but a bad thing when it comes to the fact that people have to be so damn selfish to expect a reward for being kind towards others.



So err yes, feel free to discuss, what is the meaning you have found for yourself/do you HAVE a meaning?

You posted something decent and worthwhile with a honest intention. Anyone that is offended by your post is not really welcome in the thread.

Please don't quote-splice all my replies. It feels like you wish to refute single sentences, instead of the idea as a whole. When I discuss, I enjoy a debate-style, where one sets their side, and the other refutes using their own ideas, without interruption. That's why I use forums for discussion, instead of chatrooms.

I know I refer to 'the government' too much. Really, when I say that, I'm talking about anyone who has socially accepted authority over another (police, parents).

Also, the facts say that most crimes are committed by lower income people. Proof:

So, one can deduce that low-income correlates to crime. Of course, low-income is not the direct cause of crime. The relation comes from many factors, which are also correlated to both low income and crime: alcoholism, abuse as a child, stress in keeping a job/family together. Stress causes people to commit crime. I'd say extreme stress directly correlates to crime. So how does one eliminate this stress so rampant in low-income neighborhoods? Increase income, but how, if nobody has "gone to college" to be able to earn higher income? Sincerely, how would you solve this problem, Minerva?

I don't know about the whole religion argument. Morals came before religion as a whole, and I'd assume you'd have to have morals to allow yourself to follow the religious text. But what I don't like about religion is the afterlife. Common to all popular religion is the karma concept. You get what you give. Some are nice (reincarnation), and some suck royally (Chinese hell sounds worse than Christian hell, because not only does it last a few thousand universe lifespans, but you'll have to do it over and over if you screw up in the next life. It also has layers of increasing intensity and duration. In modern Christian hell, you burn for a single eternity, in the same setting.). Ah. I'm on a tangent. Oh well. Anyway, religion has great ideas: don't kill people, don't steal, don't lie. But some people only adhere to it because they are afraid of the afterlife.

Many Christians think life is a test of soul, to see whether or not you get into heaven. But heaven is life itself! The test is the universe! The whole meaning of the universe is to become self-conscious. As simple atoms and molecules, the universe is mostly unaware. Sure, atoms react to other atoms, molecules interact with other molecules, but that isn't true perception. Life creates a better perception. As life becomes more complex, so does the universe's self awareness. Life evolves from bacteria that are pure reaction, to microorganisms with true instinct, to worms with simple memory, all the way to humans. We can experience the universe. We know that what we are experiencing is the universe. We are apart of the universe. Is the universe self-aware? No, not all the way. We still have evolving to do. Luckily, humans have reached a point where we don't need DNA to evolve. We've got language (a medium) and technology (speed).

I feel this ias a good thread, ppl have stopped discussing things peacefully and that has really been bothering me.

Anyhow, my positive thought for the day that MAY NOT BE ARGUED ABOUT, is that I am very happy with the thought that one day, the white Arian master-race will finally overcome the restraints laid upon it by a certain type of animals (black people, and micheal jackson). And finally every species will have it's rightful place in the world. Really, black people are FAR more happy working in our cotton fields, there is no debating that, it's just true. It's the way it's supposed to be.

I'll be positivism all around. And everyone, and all the animals and plants, will finally be happy.

Please don't argue this Divine truth that is totally true and not open for debate. Nothing good ever came from debate. Like TV shows us, everything gets better when you only highlight the positive and exclude intelligent discussion.

Isn't this topic for opinions? How was my opinion any different than the others here? I am not arguing any of your posts or subjects within this topic. I am stating my opinion, which is that I deem the desire to close oneself off from discussion is a desire I frown upon and I might even go as far call it morally objectionable.
