Well, there are always exceptions. For example, a purely evil leader needn't believe in heaven to start wars.

Very true, you don't have to believe in heaven to start wars or send in troops. I doubt everyone that does believes in heaven or being rewarded in the afterlife, although there are people who do.

I doubt we will goto war with Russia, we don't even have enough troops to fight a bunch of peasants in the middle east.

If russia attacks poland, and we go and defend them..that might start a conflict but a full blown war I doubt, Russia can't afford it and neither can we.

Wars are caused by prejudice. People thinking that because they are part of one group, that they are better than people of another group. Religion is one cause of war, but I dont' think it has much to do with this whole heaven thing. It certainly isn't as big a cause as nationalism is. Besides aetheism is a religion.

As long as human beings think of themselves in groups there will be conflict.

These are the causes of war imo:

Religion
Race
Power
Money


Religion divides us into groups, who fight
Race divides us by color (we are all the same imo) and people fight over race
Power divides the weak from the strong
Money divides the rich from the poor

These all cause conflict,

Can anyone think of a conflict free society we can build?

Russia has already threatened Poland for accepting the deal with the U.S. for the missile defensive system, they've threatened with attacks, possible nuclear attacks. If they attacked Poland, I'm sure the U.S. will respond by sending troops to help and I think it will turn into a war. I doubt Russia or the U.S. would back down from the conflict.

Most wars that are motivated by religion do deal with the afterlife, some believe they'll go to their version of heaven automatically for being a martyr for their country, others think they'll get to be with 40 virgins in their version of heaven, and so on. I think wars are usually some sort of political type of war, as in trying to take over the country and impose their form of government on them. I don't think, though, that the people in control of sending out military forces have religion or their version of heaven on their mind when making the choice.

I believe you can start a conflict/war over anything, as long as people are able to have opinions and free will there will be war.

You can start conflict over anything, but without if people didn't discriminate over religion, nationality and race there'd be no wars. I'm not saying no violence or conflict, but without nationalism or religious prejudice, thered be no be no armies to fight wars. Cities and towns don't fight wars with each other. Only nations do.

So the Civil War wasn't a war?

The civil war was fought between states, not cities, and not really even states. It was between the north and the south. When the south succeeded from the union it essentially became its own nation.

States are made of cities and towns, so yes it was cities and towns fighting against each other. If there wasn't nationalism, I doubt we'd have nations.

Not really. It was one side vs. the other. North vs South. There weren't two cities on the southern side of the war fighting against each other. The fighting was all done by either the confederate or union army. And do you honestly think that if we got rid of the federal government that cities would fight each other?

My point is that nations serve no purpose. At least no positive purpose. Well they do make geography make more sense, but I'd rather have world peace.

Nothern cities vs. Southern cities, and no it wasn't two cities, it was many cities.

Yes, I believe if there was no federal government, there'd still be fighting.

World peace will be impossible and can't be avoided.

There would still be fighting, but we're talking about things like war and genocide, not simple fighting. There is no need for hundreds of thousands of people to die because they are from different countries. If all countries would stop fighing each other then war would end. thus acheiving world peace. If one major country would abandon the system of constantly increase armements, then war would end.

Let's say the U.S. completely gets rid of its armies. What do you think would happen? Do you think that China would attack us or something? If a major country, or better 3-4 major countries, abandoned the military system, war would end. No one is gonna just come in and take over. Who would do that? Who could do that? Governments don't attack peaceful countries, they attack people who they feal are a threat.

This kind of situation would have to start in the u.s. because we have by far the biggest millitary and most bombs and whatnot.

Obviously if they stopped fighting war would end, you can't have war without fighting.

If the U.S. gave up it's army, we'd most definitely give up our allies, and we'd be here for the taking. Someone would come try to conquer the land.

China has the biggest military, by the way.
