Question New Microsoft Ads and Discussion about OSes

So microsoft has put out some rather unsuccessful ads countering apple's ads. The first being a rather non sensicle ad which had jerry sienfeld and bill gates doing not much of anything and just eating churros and stuff.

Now they have a "I'm a PC" ad trying to say that apple is stereotype microsoft users.

They don't really state how it is better than mac or anything. They don't quite understand that apple is stereotyping the OS itself.

Than they have some "windows mojave" ad with people not knowing it vista. Once again. Of course vista looks better. That is not the problem people have with vista. I think mac is the best looking OS around doesn't mean I like it. Those people don't have to deal with the plethora of driver issues that vista has, its instability, or its drain on resources because they just get some souped up computer. Of course vista looks good at first sight. But try to install it on your 3 year old computer and you will have a different opinion.

Keep in mind I'm not an apple fan boy. In fact other than the iPOD i don't really like anything apple has made. They are extremely closed source and extremely overpriced. They don't let their OS be on any hardware but their own and their hardware is usually of horrible value. I could build a Hackintosh for half the price of a mac and it would be a heck of a lot more upgradable and better quality.

Just want to ask what do you guys think about all of this?

I just don't think its so black and white. Both Mac and Windows have their faults. Mac is a better OS but it is closed off and much less used (meaning there is less software for it).

Windows is much more unstable and crashes every five seconds and will freeze up every time you open a program. Not to mention the more you use the more it slows down. But at the same time you can install it on any computer you want and it is more widely used.

Personally I think that microsoft did a decent job on XP and that it isn't too horrible. Vista on the other hand is a complete joke. Just download a nice little skin (black xp) and aero for XP and you have vista without the headaches...

      So...what do you think?

      PS: Please...no fanboys

Speaking of those new commercials, they used mac computers for the advertisement partially....funny isn't it?

Closed source? Darwin is open source. Windows is the last of the closed source operating systems. You can download the source code to every OSX release here

Actually, they cost about the same as a PC of the same quality.

I try to keep a few years behind the OS upgrading curve. I think I used 98 SE until about 2003/4, and I've used XP since then. My brother has been running Vista for the last year, but only because he has two 8800's and needs Vista to run them dually.

At first glance, Vista looks nice. Lots of animation, lots of protection and lots of automation. Until you actually try to do something, and realise that Microsoft has moved everything for really no good reason, making the whole experience feel very counter-intuitive.

A few things I've found that rubbed me the wrong way (yes, mostly minor)
      - Putting the 'make shortcut' button in the 'Send To' grouping.
      - Vista doesn't like to play nice with XP machines on a home network. We can access it, but it can't access us. No matter what we try. All our other XP machines have no problem reading each other.
      - The lack of a functional root directory in the Windows Explorer. It feels like they went for aethestic value and lost functionality.

I'm sure there is more but that's all I can remember at a moments notice. I'll be waiting another year or more before upgrading to Vista, if at all. And other than an iPod, I've never had an interest in any Apple products.

I am just giving both sides. By closed source i mean hardware wise. Just pointing out problems with both OSes

Basically mac is a much better OS but you are forced to buy apple's hardware.

Windows for gaming, Linux for the rest. No time for Apple's shenanigans.

Actually, if you want to do anything with media then Apple still dominates that market.

For a graphics designer mac is the best choice hands down.
