Easy answer: Because we are naturally fascinated (unless having some prepositionally biased opinion on the subject) by events we find to be strange and unusual. As socially detestable as some of the "news" we eat up is, there is a certain degree of "Wow....really???" that draws us to the stories. It's nothing but pure curiosity. While some people are conditioned to discard "fake news" as just that, others take them in at face value: as interesting, out-of-the-ordinary stories - which tell them more about what goes on in the world - that they'd like to hear more about. Simple as that.
