Is it possible to be born with STIs?

I know that in some circumstances, because of the way a baby develops in the womb it can inherit some addictions or infections from the mother. Are STIs included in this list? I never really gave it a thought. Is it possible that people are being born with STIs without ever having even had sex?

Yes. For example, if a woman has an active herpes infection at the time that she delivers a baby, the newborn may acquire congenital herpes. When this happens, the outlook for the infant is not good. Additionally, syphilis can be transmitted to developing babies in utero. It is important to note, however, that modern hospitals have certain methods of preventing these things from happening -- sometimes successfully, sometimes not.

      From Wikipedia, first paragraph...
Some STIs can also be transmitted via use of an IV drug needle after its use by an infected person, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding.
Case in point: a friend of mine(whom I wasn't allowed to play with because of this and the fact that my parents were super dumb about it) was born HIV positive and developed AIDS around the age of 6.
