I don't get it, what's the point of this thread. Is this supposed to be some kind of koan or something? I can imagine a few possible "morals" of this, but I'd rather have it explained.

so the moral is...news and tv are keeping us stuck in a cage? If that is...I heavily disagree

Basically he's free of a cage - the cage being anything that restrains people.

but...I dont see how news or tv restricts people...it has expanded people's ability to learn and reach out and see more possibilities...it does the opposite of restrain you. Unless of course you do like you do with anything and use too much of it...but that happens with anything

its kind of a throwback to Adam and Eve. With the knowledge of good and evil comes responsibility and personal accountability. Neither of the birds is better than the other, yet one can have a material, circumspect world, while the other can be free from materialism and greed without even knowing it.

It also seems to be alluding to the fact that submersion in the human paradigm leads to the belief that everything one sees on tv/in print is a discrete physical thing/place that one can find their way to.

By and large newspapers are free to disseminate information. That has the effect of increasing freedoms, not decreasing. Or are you implying those who do not have access to information about events are somehow free? I would call it irresponsible apathy.

Perhaps I'm a bit more ??? cynical? But I thought Bird 1 was basically saying it needed some cage lining and newspapers have value only as "toilet paper".
Which would mean Bird 2 is free from the influences of a corrupt and/or otherwise "lacking" media. Bird 2 is then free to make descisions based on personal observation instead of media hype.
