Actual dreams VS Memory of dreams

Since I'm yet to atain lucidity yet, I've always wondered how real a dream actually is, compared to real life. Perhaps people who have regular lucid dreams can answer.

When I wake up and remember a dream, the memory is distant, like flashes of little images of what I did in the dream.

This is why when I first started learning about lucid dreaming I didn't understand why people were saying their dreams were so awesome and real.

Then I realised that your memory of things in general is the same. Your recollection of things you did in the past, whether it be a few minutes ago or weeks ago, is just a bunch of vague little images.

So perhaps dreams are exactly like experiencing real life and your memory of those events is the same as if you actually did them. If this is true - it's a massive incentive to keep trying to have a lucid dream!

The first thought I had in my first LD was, "ohhh, no wonder I never know I'm dreaming. It's just like real life!" When I have stopped and paid attention to the details in a lucid, I am always stunned by how real things are. I remember in one dream I was holding a wine glass full of ice water. I could feel the condensed water on the outside of the glass as it collected and ran down my fingers. When I shifted my grip on the glass I could feel that the glass was still warm where my fingers had been.

However, my lucid dreams do vary quite a bit in how lifelike they are. Sometimes they seem faded and blurry when I wake up just like most regular dreams.

I've only had few dreams that were lucid but they always feel very real in the moment. I one of them I was running down a brick walk way and I could feel te uneven bricks beneath my sneakers as I ran. But also in my regular dreams, quite a bit I can remember alot of details, like walking through cobwebs in a dark hall and how gross it felt. So I think it also has a lot to do with your recall. I try to physically write down most of my dreams and find it helps a lot with detailed recall for me.
