This can often occur when certain feelings are either intentionally or unintentionally repressed, and/or when you are undergoing life events and circumstances that you are trying to avoid thinking about. The lack of recognition over a period of time becomes a sort of "feedback loop", and the building intensity is progressively ignored until it becomes so intense that it manifests in such vivid dreams. It may not even be a "negative" experience you are trying to avoid. For example, very vivid dreams of forgetfulness or confusion or even anxiety can appear if a person is extremely focused on generating lucid dreams. The mind responds by continuously amplifying the experience in the face of continuous ignorance of the dream state. Eventually it will work itself out and the predominance of signs will overcome the tendency of the mind to ignore them. But as you say, it may become very vivid and almost "anti-lucid" before a substantial breakthrough occurs. It is a bit similar to the saying "it is darkest before the light" - which is not always the case but certainly does happen. |
