I downloaded Robert Monroe's tracks (Wave I-VI) which oriented me with different relaxation and mental fortification techniques, and it was very helpful. His favorite method for relaxations was counting up to ten, with the understanding that each number higher you will be at a different level of tranquility and calm. And what I mean by mental fortification was techniques designed to counter any sort of scary subconscious thoughts that might creep up (I am surrounded by a bubble of light, and only things that are beneficial to me are allowed to enter, etc). The first few "waves" or series of tracks were very helpful in this sort of basic orientation.
However, the next few began to use binaural soundwaves, and I could not for the life of me fall into the same level of relaxation with the sounds playing. The few times that I did fall asleep with sound on was when I fell asleep doing homework to classical music, face down on my desk. I remember having a dream that I was in some fancy ballroom, complete with classical background music, except that my face was smushed (as it was in reality). I also remember that the music was extremely distorted, slowed down and drawn out, which was a bit unnerving.
I do warn you however, being raised in the country and now living in the city, there is a great deal of adjustment that comes with changing sound levels. I've grown so accustomed to the white noise of the city that falling asleep in the dead quiet is unnerving.
