I've heard everywhere that numbers and latters are random in dreams, that's why the time RC works -- you look at a clock then back again and it's different. However, this doesn't seem to be the case for me. In one non-lucid dream I was in a store looking for a particular item. The price tags of the item stayed the same. I picked it up, it said $3.99, then I went to pay for it and it was $3.99, and the numbers seemed right to me. If they had changed I would have become lucid, because I looked at the price many times.

Then last night in my Lucid Dream, I was on the beach trying to summon a phone. However, instead of getting a phone, I saw my dad's cell phone number written backwards in the sand. Then I tried again, and my cell phone number appeared in the sand. Everytime I looked, they were the same. Why is this? I thought it was a basic rule that letters and numbers are random.

It's pretty much what you expect it to be, and it doesn't work for all people of course. In the non lucid, you didn't know you were dreaming so you didn't expect for the price tag to change. In the lucid, since they were phone numbers you knew very well, not just random text you've never read before, they wouldn't change either, since they are lodged in your subconcious. If you wrote a bunch of numbers that made no sense down, looked away, and looked back, they would probably change.

It seems like random numbers and letters have gone away as a DS for me as I became more aware of it. I blame my subconscious and its ongoing effort to prevent me from becoming lucid. Now I read whole contracts with pages of text and everything seems normal.

i dont really see numbers in my dreams. I consider my dreams to be a primitive form, where there arent any numbers or letters, simply actions. thats the best way i can explain it. so it would never be a good dream sign for me. The only exception is when i was little i always had dreams where i knew it was very late at night and the clock said stuff like 3 PM and i ooked again and it said 13:73 or soemthing crazy. it happened a couple times but went away as i started to not be afraid of not getting any sleep.

I got to where I hated looking at clocks in dreams. The numbers would change - sometimes to letters or shapes and it totally freaked me out big time!! So I just sort of quit looking at them. I prefer other RC's.

I wonder if before clocks were digital the hands were weird or the numbers were wrong. I can't remember.

My current understanding is: if the mind is stable, the numbers and words won't change (unless you want it to). This applies to other objects (including people) in your dream.

Please be aware that not ALL reality checks work for everyone, for instance in a dream one of my freinds said "oh my god im dreaming!"
and i remember trying to persade him that it wasnt and was infact real life, i showed him this my placing fingers on my palm (there supposed to go through your palm if your dreaming)
Our dreams are firsthand creations, rather than residues of waking life. We have the capacity for infinite creativity.

Numbers are very stable in my dreams only with the help of concentration. They become unstable if I don't focuse enough on them. But If I concentrate enough I can see a number for example on a clock and look away for a few seconds and look back and the same number would be there. I have a very difficult time with letters it seems almost impossible to stablize them without them changing even with high level lucidity covered in full concentration. But I'm still working on it.

Like said before, letters and numbers aren't always random. For example, I had a dream that my dad was trying to tell me how great the number 21 is. I really don't know why, but it was always the number 21. The number 21 was even spraypainted on the ground! I was surprised how consistent the number really was.

How do you concentrate or increase concentration in a dream? Any methods? Techniques? Tips?

Yup! I have a bit of a technique. It's mostly on focus and a little verbal help. Once I look at the number I keep the image displayed mentally to the point where it's like stuck in my mind. I usually close my dream eyes and focus the number in my mind while repeating the phrase in my mind "Clairty" over and over and I picture the sequence of numbers exactly how I remember them and when I open my dream eyes it stays consistent. Not only that, my environment is usually more real also everything becomes more vibrant thus stabilizing the Lucid Dream

A real good RC to try is the one where you hold you're nose and try and breath it has never failed me yet. The numbers one has failed once and I usually have to do the number RC twice in order to become lucid.

Good question! I can't remember either. I don't recall having this problem until digitals came out. Something about those looming, bright red numbers screaming through the darkness... I dunno, it was just freaky for me.
