I was reading a pretty detailed explanations of REM cycles and it said that as you sleep your REM cycles get longer. They first is somewhere around about 10 minutes - 15 minutes and the last one before you wake up is about 1.5 hours - 2 hours.

This made me think. Is one REM cycle superior to another when it comes to lucid dreaming? Is it easier to recall a dream or have a lucid dream when you are in your first REM cycle or last REM cycle? Or are they the same in every way?

Does anyone have the answer to thins?

I'm no expert, but I don't think its any easier to recall dreams or have a lucid dream in a particular REM period. However, it could be said the later REM periods are superior as they are longer, so you have a better chance of waking up during them, and so recalling a dream, and you have a better chance to induce a DILD (or whatever method I guess), again because of the longer duration. That's why (among other reasons) the WBTB method advises waking up after several hours sleep, during the later REM periods, then going back to sleep during those same REM periods. So I think the only difference between the REM periods is their duration, the longer the better when it comes to lucid dreaming.

With longer periods of REM cycles comes more vivid images and sensations to remember. However, there is no dominance or extentuating sincereity or importance of the dreams - it is all a matter of the emotional attachment of the individual. Hence, considering that all dreaming is in truth recollection of these events (which is what causes much incongruity and amnesia) those manifest and latent contents in the context of the dreams that you deem most important are what will become most vivid and important to you - it is all relative.

Of course, with longer REM periods there is a greater chance to conjure up personally favored memories or senses. However, there is no evidence that the cycles get "stronger" or more vivid as the cycles go along. Your brain wave patters and neurotransmitter production remain at a similar or somewhat constant level that is analguous to your conscious state.

      I hope that was enlightening.

Yup O'nus is absolutley right. The longer the REM the greater your chance for Lucidity.
